14. What motivates you to join the Discussion Group Team?

The multicultural nature of Australian society and the world abroad creates the need for our future
leaders to have a cross-cultural understanding of the people you meet and work with on a daily
basis. Volunteering for the Discussion Group Team is an excellent way for me to assist in promoting
intercultural awareness among my fellow peers so that they can be well prepared to work in a
multicultural environment.
English, being one of the main languages frequently used around the world means that for many
international students who lack competent use of the English language a barrier exists that prevents
them from truly becoming a part of Australian society. Being a volunteer for the Discussion Group
Team enables me to assist international students in overcoming that language barrier.
The Discussion Group Team is also a fantastic opportunity for me to develop my own intercultural
understanding through the various international students I will be able to meet, learning firsthand
about the various cultures without having to travel abroad.
