Hope College Education Department EDUC 310/311 Lesson Plan Assignment Students will write two versions of the

same lesson plan a longer think aloud version that describes the lesson in detail and a shorter real world version that captures the pertinent information needed to teach. Both versions are due at least one week before teaching the lesson. Lesson Plan Think Aloud Version Name Meagan Wylie When do you plan to teach this lesson? 4/1/14 Content Area English Language Arts Topic Comprehension Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.4.A Read grade-level text with purpose and

understanding.
Thinking about the learning Rationale This is so important to teach because a lot of our students are struggling with comprehension. Teaching this skill will allow students to build the skill of comprehension as well give them tools to help with comprehension. Preassessment Students already know basic things about comprehension. I know this because I have lead reading groups as well as observed reading lessons and have observed students and their comprehension skills. Objective This lesson will teach students a new tool to develop comprehension skills. Students will be able to stop and make connections to their prior knowledge. My goal is that they will be able to complete a worksheet as I read and then be able to effectively retell a story. I have noticed that many of these students do not monitor their own comprehension. The comprehension is lead by the teacher and students do not take ownership of their own reading. Therefore, I am trying to develop students self-monitoring skills. Summative Assessment My summative assessment will be having them apply this new skill to their own text. I will have the students split up into groups and read a book. I will ask them to apply this new skill and have a discussion about the book. I will be going around the classroom to be listening to them read and check in to see how they are doing. I will always be listening to the discussion and asking them about the predictions that are being made.

Thinking about the lesson Introduction I will print off pictures of Ellis Island and tell them that these are clues to what we are discussing today. I will then ask them what they think this book is about. This will help them with their prior knowledge of the subject. This is also cross-curricular because they have to use their prior knowledge of what they have learned in social studies. Furthermore, we will be discussing Ellis Island and this will provide them with another perspective on what they have already been learning. Connection I will hope that they will have been making connections to their new knowledge about immigration and Ellis Island. However, the skill I will have to teach them will be DRTA. The technique is that students are able to make predictions based off of prior knowledge and what they have read so far to increase comprehension. The idea is that students make predictions and then monitor what is going on the story to see if their prediction should stay them same or change. Reading books this way leads the way to opportunity for discussion. Task I will use the DRTA during the lesson. This theory is begins with students making predictions about what they think they are going to read based on the pictures as well as the title. During the reading, we will pause at different times to allow for discussion and to make new predictions. Formative Assessment I will constantly be monitoring students comprehension by listening to their responses and checking to see if they are making new predictions in the story. The formative assessment will not only be the discussions of Ellis Island but asking students if their predictions have changed. At the end I will ask students what specific events caused their predictions to change. Accommodations One accommodation that I constantly need to make for my students is differentiation. Many of my students are at different levels academically and it can be a very big problem when we are trying to teach students different things. Therefore, I still engage every student by asking them questions, however, I know which question to ask to which student and how much to expect of each student. Closure I will ask the students to summarize the procedure to me to synthesize their learning. I will ask them to tell me why they thought they did this procedure to see if they would be able to apply it to their own reading. Finally I will give each table a book and ask them to do this activity themselves. Technology The only way technology will enhance this lesson will be prior to teaching it. I will be printing off picture of Ellis Island as well as creating a worksheet. However, I do not think that technology would help an extraordinary amount in this case.

Logistics I will need books, worksheets, and pictures. I will also tell students that they need to bring a pencil and that every other material should be put away. Finally, since they are reading, I will give the students the option of where they would like to sit. As long as they are comfortable and respectful, I do not mind where they need to place their bodies for them to learn the best.
