Concert Attendance Project

Greenleaf Friends Academy Music Department Fall 2013

Due Date: ONE WEEK from the date of attendance of performance, but NO LATER than Friday, January 17, 2014. **No late papers will be accepted after January 17. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD.** Overview/Rationale: One of the goals of this class is to have students engage in music outside of the classroom. Engaging with music outside of the classroom encourages diligent practice outside of class, promotes active participation during class, and fosters motivation and goal setting for personal improvement. Additionally, students will experience how music is being developed in the community on a professional and cultural level. This assignment will fulfill the following NAfME National Standards for Music Education: (6) Listening to, analyzing, and describing music; (7) Evaluating music and music performances; (8) Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts. Guidelines: Attend four (4) concerts or performances during the course of the semester and write a review for each concert or performance. You may include professional, college, community, or high school level performances, however only one of the four performances may be high school level. Rock/Pop/Hip Hop/Country genre concerts are not acceptable (some considerations may be made for specific groups or artists; please see Mrs. Shatto with specific concerns). Some acceptable performances include: jazz concerts, musical theater performances, operas, Boise Baroque Orchestra performances, Boise Philharmonic and Master Chorale performances, Music Theater of Idaho, Caldwell Fine Arts concerts, collegiate-level choral, band, or orchestra concerts from College of Idaho, NNU, or Boise State, or high school level choral, band, or orchestra concerts from area high schools. If a concert you wish to attend does not fall into one of these categories, please see Mrs. Shatto for approval BEFORE attending the concert. You must be an audience member. You may not use a concert in which you are a performer. You cannot use an event that took place before August 30, 2013. Directions: 1. Attend four concerts or performances under the guidelines above, throughout the course of the semester. 2. Within ONE WEEK of each performance, please turn in a short evaluation paper (please see attached rubric for paper guidelines), AND a ticket stub or program from the performance stapled to the evaluation paper. The ticket/program must have information about the performance. If it does not, please bring some form of documentation which will serve as proof of concert attendance (this could include the signature of the director/conductor or one of the performers). 3. Please hand in all concert information before the end of the day on December 20, 2013.

Questions to Think About

General Information and Introduction: What did you see? When did you see it? Where did you see it? What did the venue look like on the inside and outside? Was it appropriate? Who did you go with? Who was the audience? Was it what you expected? Music Analysis: Name one of the pieces and the composer. Give some background information on the composer and the piece (Program notes are a good place to get some of this information). What type of group are you listening to (orchestra, choir, jazz band, etc.)? What instruments/voices are performing? What was the mood of the music and what made you come to that decision? Describe something you found interesting about the rhythm of the piece. What was the tempo of the piece? Does it change or was it steady? What is the meter? How can you tell? What instruments have the melody? Were there any solos? Evaluation: Did you enjoy the experience? Did the other people in the audience? What was the best part? What was the worst part? Would you see the performance again? Something similar? Would you recommend this performance to someone else? Who? Compare and/or contrast this piece to something weve listened to or performed in class.

Evaluation Paper Guidelines

Minimum two pages, typed, double spaced, 12 point font Make sure your name, class period, and the performance date are in the upper right corner of the first page. Grammar, spelling and punctuation all must be correct for full credit. The above questions will help guide your paper. Questions from each of the three categories (General Information, Music Analysis, and Evaluation) must be answered.
