Lesson Plan 2

Teacher Candidate Brittany Queen School Brewer Middle School Date and Time of Lesson 4/3/2014 Subject/Grade Level Math 6th Grade

Description of Lesson: The students will identify properties of parallelograms, including base and height. They will find the perimeter and area of parallelograms and use the correct units for each. Lesson Title: Properties of Parallelograms Curriculum Standards Addressed: SC Curriculum Standard(s): 6-5 The student will demonstrate through mathematical processes an understanding of surface are; the perimeter and area of irregular shapes; the relationships among the circumference, diameter, and radius of a circle; the use of proportions to determine unit rates; and the use of scale to determine distance. SC Academic Indicator(s): 6-5.4 Apply strategies and procedures to estimate the perimeters and areas of irregular shapes. 6-5.5 Apply strategies and procedures of combining and subdividing to find the perimeters and areas of irregular shapes. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: When given a parallelogram, the students should be able to identify the base and height of the parallelogram, find the perimeter, and find the area using two different methods. They should be able to identify/find each property with 80% accuracy. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: The students will be given time to work on problems independently as I observe the work they are doing. Students will also be prompted to answer questions about the properties. They will be given a homework sheet after class is over to give them some extra practice.

Materials/Resources: Pen/Pencil, Notebook, Promethean Board Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students need to recall formulas for area of squares, rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms. Know to subdivide using familiar shapes. Know how to calculate perimeter. Record the final answer using correct units. Estimate perimeter and area using terms like at least, a little more, about etc. Calculate perimeter using whole and rational numbers. References: Cooperating Teacher

Procedures: The lesson will be presented using a Promethean Flip-Chart. I will begin the lesson by asking the students to think about what the base and height might be in a parallelogram; they will need to be able explain their reasoning. They will then be asked to identify the base and height of different parallelograms. The students will be asked to think about how to find the perimeter and area of a parallelogram, and we will discuss their findings as a class. They will be given problems to work through while I walk around and observe their work. The class will go over the problems together, and I will answer any questions the students may have.
