6th Grade Social Studies Types of Government Student Learning Outcomes Students will research one of the four

main types of government and prepare a presentation for the rest of the class describing the relationship between those in charge and individual citizens and using real-world examples. State Standards Standard 1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text Standard 2: Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details, provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. Standard 3: Describe the relationship between those in power and individual citizens in a democracy, dictatorship, monarchy and theocracy Time Frame: 2-3 Days Instructional Steps: 1. As an introduction to the topic of government types, the teacher will ask the students what they remember from the previous school year about the four types of government. It is perfectly fine if the students struggle with this part of the assignment. 2. Randomize class into four groups using the sucker method. Each sucker has one of four colors on the bottom of it and each color represents one of the four types of government. 3. Once the students are in their groups, give them directions to come up with at least two words or phrases that describes their type of government. The students are to write the terms they come up with on the smart board under the name of their government. 4. Students then are to look over the list of references the teacher provides and do some basic research over their type of government. They are to gather what they think is most important from the websites to create a presentation. 5. After a few minutes of researching, the students should revisit the smart board chart to add more terms to their governments column. The teacher will go over the terms, then the students will return to researching for more information. 6. The teacher is to introduce Glogster and give the students a brief tutorial over what Glogster is and how to use it. The teacher will have a pre-made Glogster example for students with additional questions. 7. Students are to make their own presentation with the information from the research they did. 8. Each group is going to give a 8-10 minute presentation to the rest of the class 9. After all of the groups have presented, the teacher is to give an online quiz to the students, not for a grade, but more to see if the students understood and retained the information that was presented by their classmates. *In case of technology issues: Students will still be able to do this lesson without technology. Teachers should have the webquest pages printed for the students to have in hand. Students

can create a KWL chart on paper in small groups instead of using the smartboard and the presentations can be written on a poster. The exit slip can be done verbally by the teacher and the students can record their answers on paper to turn in to the teacher.
