Objectives: Following an example from the teacher, the students will be able to evaluate an argument and assess whether the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims being made with 80% accuracy. Procedure: Teacher-led think aloud activity of You be the judge case (vandalism) with video clips. This should take the entire class today. It will switch between the informative clips on the website and the sheet we will fill out as a class. Questions to the students: What do we know about the accused? Do you think his previous convictions is significant? What are some of the aggravating and mitigating factors presented? Do you think the fact that Robert was drunk is significant? Would the prospect of Robert losing his job influence your sentence? What are some of the sentence considerations? What do you think his sentence should be? How do you feel about his final sentencing? Assessment: The following class the students will be assigned partners and given another case from the same website to do on their own. They will be assessed based on their completion of the worksheet. They will also be formatively assessed as we discuss as a class together. Bridge: The next day, the students will be assigned another case to complete with a partner.
