Mixtures and Solutions

Created By: Allison Daniel

Topic: The main differences between a mixture and a solution. Vocabulary: Mixtures, solutions, dissolve Objectives: Teach students the difference between mixtures and solutions Give students interactive activates to better understand the topic

Warm up:
Approx. 5 minutes Ask students if they know the difference between a mixture and solution. Give them a small test to gather how much they already know about the topic.

Lesson:
Approx. 20 minutes When you mix things together you make solutions and mixtures. A mixture is two or more materials mixed or stirred together. Examples of this can be trail mix, sand and water, Chex mix, even gluing things. Some mixtures are easy to take apart like trail mix, but other mixtures are hard to take a part like sand and water. Ask the students to come up with their own versions of mixtures. A solution is a special mixture formed when a material dissolves in a liquid and cannot be filtered out. For example if you pour sugar in water it will dissolve in the water. Another example is Kool-Aid. Solutions are hard to take apart. Ask the students to come up with other examples.

Activity:
1. Flip Book: Have students create a flip book. Write vocabulary words on the top part. Then, have them write definitions and examples on the inside. (10 minutes) 2. Trail Mix and Kool-Aid: Bring trail-mix and Kool-Aid to pass out to the students. Have the students take apart the trail-mix and put it back together to show it is a mixture. Make Kool-Aid in front of the students to show it is a solution and cannot be taken apart. (20 minutes)
