consult with your client and before coloring your clients hair, ask: Have you ever colored your hair? Do you have any allergies? Have you ever had a reaction to haircolor?  Knowing answers to these questions will help you properly determine if your client is sensitive to certain hair products and will assist you with your product choice. Does your client have a tattoo? If your client has a tattoo, the risk of an allergic reaction may be increased.

always examine your clients scalp  Examine your clients scalp for abrasions or irritations. If your client has scalp irritation, we advise you not to color your clients hair that day. Advise your client to consult a physician for treatment.

test for allergies Perform a skin allergy test 48 hours before each use, as allergies can develop suddenly, even though your client has previously used a haircolor product from this brand or another. Clean an area the size of a quarter in the bend of your clients elbow with soap and water. Pat dry.  Using a plastic utensil, mix a small amount of your final formula developer in a plastic or glass container. Tightly recap the hair-colorant and developer. Do not use metal utensils. Apply mixture to the test area with a cotton swab or ball. Let test spot dry. Instruct client not to wash, cover or disturb for 48 hours. Instruct client to examine test area periodically over the next 48 hours.  If he/she experiences any reactions - such as redness, burning, itching, swelling, skin abrasions, eruptions or irritation in or around the test area, DO NOT COLOR YOUR CLIENTS HAIR UNTIL HE OR SHE HAS CONSULTED A DOCTOR. If no reaction has occurred, you are ready to color.
