Causes of Poverty in Latin America Context: Class Particulars Spanish II Description of Learners Oral: Novice High, Written: Intermediate

te Mid. The students have already learned about the geography of Latin America and some culture, including food and music. Theyve already learned that poverty exists in Latin America, but this is their first time exploring it thoroughly. Desired Results: What should students know and be able to do? Standards Interpretive Communication 1.2 Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. Presentational Communication 1.3 Students present info, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. Practices and Perspectives 2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. Comparing Cultures 4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the language studied and their own. Objectives The students will be able to describe what poverty in Latin America looks like. The students will be able to identify some causes of poverty in Latin America. Materials Map of Latin America, computer with speakers and projector, video of interviews, article Acceptable Evidence: How will you know if students have achieved the desired results? Students will share what they learned from the video and teacher will assess whether they got the main points or not. Teacher will circulate as students make posters about the causes of poverty.

Learning Experiences: What activities are part of the lesson? What is the instructional sequence? What are learners doing? What are you doing? 1. Warm-Up: Have students respond to the following questions in their journals: Do you know anyone who lives in poverty? What do you think causes poverty? 2. Discuss warm-up responses. 3. Watch interviews with people living in poverty and takes notes on note sheet about why impoverished and what their lives are like.

4. Put students in groups and have each student in the group read a part of the article about the causes of poverty. Each student shares the main points from his/her section with the rest of the group to jigsaw the article. In their groups, the students will create posters highlighting the main causes of poverty in Latin America. The groups will then share and compare their posters with the whole class. 5. Homework: What kind of effects do you think poverty has on the Latin American society? Brainstorm a list of at least 5 ideas.
