1. Retry the job. 2. If this fails, try another job. 3. If this fails reboot the engine and the RIP PC and retry the job.

113

Optics Hardware Initialisation Setup Failed Description: Unable to to initialise hardware. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Reboot the engine. 2. If the error recurs, call FFEI Customer Support (UK) for further information.

119

Dew Point Reached Peltier Switched Off Description: The laser Peltier has been shut down as the drum temperature has exceeded 34 C. If the ambient temperature is too high, and as the laser diode block is cooled by the Peltier, dew could form on the laser diode lens which could then damage the laser. This has been prevented by disabling the Peltier. This warning will be shown for all jobs exposed until the temperature is brought down within recommended limits. Expose will continue as normal but image quality and laser life may be affected. Operation outside recommended limits is recorded within the laser and could affect the laser warranty. The drum temperature is read using the FPD assembly. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Check the ambient temperature. 2. Read the drum temperature using the command read_drum_temp. 3. The drum temperature should be within 2 C of the ambient temperature. 4. If the drum reading is faulty, then replace the FPD. 5. Replace the LCB.

126

Expose Compensating Calculation Failed Description: During an expose with temperature compensation, there was a problem calculating the ND required or, when exposing a P-step wedge, there was a problem reading the patch number from NVRAM. The job will be aborted. NONFATAL.

LUXEL P LATESETTER 5

Recovery:
1. Switch on debug edbg 40 and 25 and capture text. 2. Run the job again. 3. If the problem persists, disable temperature compensation from the optics/

mmi Machine Setup screen.

4. Run further jobs without temperature compensation. 5. Send the captured text to FFEI for analysis.

128

Expose Calibration Nvram Problem Description: There was a problem reading or writing NVRAM during exposure calibration. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Switch on debug edbg 33 and edbg 34 and capture text. 2. Run exposure calibration. 3. Send the captured text to FFEI for analysis. 4. To keep the machine going temporarily, manually enter the last known good

set of *RIP_EXPOSE* ND values into NVRAM and set all the *WORKING_DRIVE* values to 930 (total of 16 values to enter). Then do not run exposure calibration again until the problem is fixed. 129 Expose Calibration FPD Measure Failed Description: There was a problem during a read of the FPD either when enabling or disabling the laser. The FPD is not read during normal exposure, but only during exposure calibration, or with diagnostic commands, such as, measure_extinction, locate_FPD or ND_Char. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser has shut down. If it has, then

lstatus should show the reason, for example, current limit.

2. If the laser is not shutdown, run lenable drive 96 and check lstatus again. 3. If the problem persists, then enable debug edbg 25 and capture text. 4. Retry the procedure causing the error and send the captured text to FFEI for

analysis. 130 Expose Calibration ND Adjust Failed Description: During exposure calibration, a calculation to find the ND value or the laser drive for either 48 or 96 resolutions failed. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Switch on debug edbg 33 and edbg 34 and capture text. 2. Run exposure calibration. 3. Send the captured text to FFEI for analysis.

6 OPTICS ERRORS

4. If exposure calibration fails every time, to keep the machine going

temporarily, enter manually the last known good set of *RIP_EXPOSE* ND values into NVRAM and set all the *WORKING_DRIVE* values to 930 (total of 16 values to enter). Then do not run exposure calibration again until the problem is fixed. 132 Expose Calibration Associated Resolution Failed Description: During exposure calibration, a calculation to find the ND value or the laser drive for either 47, 50, 94, 100,142 or 144 resolutions failed. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Switch on debug edbg 33 and edbg 34 and capture text. 2. Run exposure calibration. 3. Send the captured text to FFEI for analysis.

133 Expose Calibration Failed Description: An error occurred during exposure calibration because there were problems with laser initialisation, spinner status or traverse status. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run lenable drive 96 and lstatus to check that the laser starts correctly. 2. Run spinner/start, then spinner/idle to check that the spinner starts and

then goes to idle.

3. Check the traverse for obstructions. 4. Run traverse/datum to check that the traverse moves to datum. 5. Run traverse/goto pos=-800000 to check that the traverse moves and

check the green LED on the traverse read head for any problems. 139 Calibration Files Restore Fail Description: The ND_Char file was not retrieved during machine bootup. This may be because the ND_Char file is missing. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Switch on debug edbg 33 and edbg 34. 2. Run ND_Char utility 3. Run restore_nd_char to check that the file exists. 4. Reboot the engine to check that the 139 error has gone. This will also clear

the debug switches.

5. Run exposure calibration since this depends on ND_Char.

LUXEL P LATESETTER 7

143

Expose Not Enough Power Description: There is not enough laser power available to expose at the ND defined by exposure calibration plus the extra power needed to compensate for temperature when the drum is cold. The ND will be at maximum and the laser will be at maximum drive. The expose continues as normal so the job will not be lost, although it will be under-exposed. The error is shown for all jobs affected and will be cleared when the error is removed, for example, when a higher resolution is requested which requires less power. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Check that the machine is not being operated outside the specified

temperature range of 18 C to 29 C.
2. Check the ND values from the MMI and clean the spinner mirror. Exposure

calibration will run on reboot. Check that the new ND values are lower. Linearise the screens again and then retry the jobs.
3. If power cannot be recovered by cleaning the spinner, then check for loss of

power within the optics. 144 Drum Temperature too Low Description: The temperature read by the drum temperature sensor is below 5 C. The temperature sensor is mounted on the FPD board and read by the LCB. FATAL. Recovery:
1. To keep the machine going temporarily, disable Temperature Compensation

in the engine and reboot. This allows plates to be exposed until the fault is fixed.
2. Replace the FPD board. 3. Replace the LCB.

145

Setup Serialiser Failed Description: During an expose, there was a problem reading the resolutions from the job file, or there was a problem fetching parameters from NVRAM, or setting up the laser APC. The job will be aborted. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Capture text. 2. Rerun the job. 3. If the error persists, save an elog file and send the captured text and elog to

FFEI for analysis. 146 Laser Age Current Rate Exceeded Description: The laser current is read once per day during the laser ageing check. The current has increased by more than 7% since the measurement from the previous day. This indicates that the laser will rapidly reach end of life. The problem could also arise if the LCB cannot read the Photo Diode ADC. NON-

8 OPTICS ERRORS

FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the laser_stat diagnostic to check the increase of laser current since

new and the dates when the current increased. Each entry in the table indicates an increase of current of greater than 10%.
2. If the laser is showing a rapid increase of current, then replace the laser. 3. If the error persists, change the LCB.

151

Laser Age at End of Life Description: The laser current has increased by more than 50% since new. This indicates that the laser will reach end of life within the next few months. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the laser_stat diagnostic to check the increase of laser current since

new and the dates when the current increased. Each entry in the table indicates an increase of current of greater than 10%.
2. Replace the laser within the next 2 months.

175

Spinner Mirror Contaminated Description: The spinner mirror is contaminated and losing more than 15% of the power. Assuming that exposure calibration has been run recently, the expose will continue as normal and will be correctly exposed. The warning will be removed when the contamination is removed. Note that contamination is measured separately for LO and HI resolutions so a 96res job may show the warning and a 48res job may not. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Hold the job queue and wait for all jobs on the engine to complete. 2. Clean the spinner mirror using the diagnostic from the MMI. 3. On engine reboot, exposure calibration will run automatically. 4. Re-linearise the screens used. 5. Restart the job queue.

182

Laser Diode Board Not Connected Description: The laser diode board is not connected to the LCB. There is a loopback on the laser diode board through the laser ribbon cable which indicates to the LCB that the laser diode board is connected. The laser is either disconnected or faulty, or there is a fault on the LCB. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser diode board is connected. 2. If the laser is in the shutdown state, then reboot the engine. 3. Run the lstatus diagnostic again to check if the laser diode board is

connected and the laser is not in the shutdown state.

LUXEL P LATESETTER 9

4. If the error persists then check that the laser cable is connected to the LCB. 5. Replace the LCB. 6. Replace the laser.

183

Laser Photo Diode Board Not Connected Description: The laser photodiode board is not connected to the LCB There is a loopback on the laser photodiode board through the laser ribbon cable which indicates to the LCB that the laser photodiode board is connected. The laser is either disconnected or faulty, or there is a fault on the LCB. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser photodiode board is

connected.
2. If the laser is in the shutdown state, then reboot the engine. 3. Run the lstatus diagnostic again to check if the laser photodiode board is

connected and the laser is not in the shutdown state.

4. If the error persists then check that the laser cable is connected to the LCB. 5. Replace the LCB. 6. Replace the laser.

184

Laser Current Limit Exceeded Description: The laser current limit has been exceeded. When the laser is turned on, the operating current is compared against the working current limit values in NVRAM. This error indicates that the operating current has exceeded the working limit value. The limit value in lcpd_params is the original value when the laser was first installed. Every 24 hours, laser ageing runs which measures the laser current and updates the working limit values. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser current limit has been

exceeded
2. Check the original limit value using lcpd_params. Check in NVRAM all the

*WORKING_LIMIT* values. They should all be the same and should be similar or higher than the original limit value
3. If the working_limit values are low, then lcpd_params change should be

used to reset the original parameters, then follow the procedure as if the laser had been changed.
4. If the laser is in the shutdown state, then reboot the engine. 5. Run the lstatus diagnostic again to check if the laser current limit is OK. 6. If so, enable the laser using lenable drive 96. 7. Run the lstatus diagnostic again to check if the laser current limit has been

exceeded.
8. If the laser starts OK, then run laser_aging diagnostic to update the working

limit values.

10 OPTICS ERRORS

9. If the problem persists, then replace the laser. 10. Replace the LCB.

185

Laser Power Limit Exceeded Description: The laser power limit has been exceeded. This error indicates that the laser power monitored by the photodiode board within the laser module is higher than a limit value set in the hardware on the LCB. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser power limit has been

exceeded.
2. If the laser is in the shutdown state, then reboot the engine. 3. Run the lstatus diagnostic again to check if the laser power limit is OK. 4. If so, enable the laser using lenable drive 96. 5. Run the lstatus diagnostic again to check if the laser power limit is OK. 6. Enable and disable the laser several times and check if the power limit is

exceeded.
7. If the problem persists, then replace the laser. 8. Replace the LCB.

186

Laser Peltier Error Fail Description: The laser Peltier temperature sensor is showing a value outside expected limits. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser Peltier temperature is OK. 2. If the problem persists, then replace the laser. 3. Replace the LCB.

187

Laser Shutdown Description: The laser is in the shutdown state caused by either the laser headboard or the photodiode board disconnected or there has been a laser current limit or power limit exceeded. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser is in the shutdown state. 2. Check LED D5 on the LCB which indicates the laser is in the shutdown

state.
3. Reboot the engine and check if the laser is not in the shutdown state. 4. Enable the laser using lenable drive 96. 5. Run lstatus diagnostic again to check if the laser is in the shutdown state. 6. If the problem persists, then replace the laser.

LUXEL PLATESETTER 11

7. Replace the LCB.

188

Laser Peltier OK Fail Description: The laser Peltier is not at the expected demand temperature The expose will continue as normal although image quality and laser life may be affected. If the ambient temperature is too high, the Peltier will be shut down by the software and this would also affect the demand temperature. This will recover when the ambient temperature is brought back within limits. If the error persists, then it indicates a fault on the laser or the LCB or the FPD (which measures the drum temperature). NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the Peltier is at the demand

temperature.
2. Also check within lstatus if the Peltier is disabled (shut down). If so, then

this would also cause the Peltier demand temperature to be wrong.

3. Check LED D4 on the LCB which indicates the Peltier is not at the demand

temperature and LED D3 which indicates that the Peltier is shut down.
4. If the Peltier is disabled, then run read_drum_temp diagnostic to check the

drum termperature. If this is >34 C, then this is the reason for the Peltier shutdown.
5. If read_drum_temperature indicates an abnormally high temperature,

replace the FPD assembly.

6. Replace the LCB. 7. Replace the laser.

189

Laser Peltier Shutdown Description: The laser Peltier is shut down. The expose will continue as normal although image quality and laser life may be affected. If the ambient temperature is too high, the Peltier will be shut down by the software and this warning may be shown. This will recover when the ambient temperature is brought back within limits. If the error persists, then it indicates a fault on the laser, or the LCB, or the FPD (which measures the drum temperature). NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run the lstatus diagnostic to check if the Peltier is disabled (shut down). 2. Check LED D3 on the LCB which indicates the Peltier is shut down. 3. Run read_drum_temp diagnostic to check the drum termperature. If this is

>34 C, then this is the reason for the Peltier shutdown.

4. If read_drum_temperature indicates an abnormally high temperature,

replace the FPD assembly.

5. Replace the LCB. 6. Replace the laser.

12 OPTICS ERRORS

190

Laser Age Fail Description: The laser ageing check has failed. This is performed once every 24 hours. This could be because the laser has shut down, or there is a problem with the interface between LCB and laser, or the LCB has a problem reading the ADC for the photodiode. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Run lstatus diagnostic to check if the laser has shut down. If it has, then

lstatus should show the reason, for example, current limit.

2. Reboot the engine, enable the laser, then check lstatus again for shutdown. 3. Check for corruption of NVRAM in the laser. 4. If the problem persists, then replace the laser. 5. Replace the LCB.

191

Expose Calibration Max ND Fail Description: During exposure calibration, all 8 resolutions reached the maximum ND value defined in ND_MAX_TRANSMISSION in the optics/mmi Machine Setup screen. The set of ND values will not be updated and the previous good set will be used. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Check the %dots on a linearisation strip to see if the exposure level is

correct.
2. If exposure is incorrect, then check that the mechanical shutter at the optics

output is not closed.

3. Check for any obstructions in the light path, for example, cables, baffle 4. Check for loss of power within the optics. 5. If the exposure is correct, replace the FPD board. 6. Replace the LCB.

192 Laser Integrator Current Low Description: The laser drive current is lower than expected. When the laser is switched on at the start of a scan, the laser drive current is checked. If outside limits, the error is reported at the end of the scan. This error is reporting a drive current less than 100 which indicates that the photodiode on the laser is seeing too much power or the ADC on the LCB is reading an incorrect value from the photodiode. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Switch on the laser using lenable drive 96. 2. Check the laser current using lcurrent. This should indicate a drive current

greater than 100 and should be typically 1500.

3. Check the photodiode power using lpower. This should indicate a power in

the range 3000 to 3500 but not as high as 4000.

LUXEL PLATESETTER 13

4. If the problem persists, replace the LCB. 5. Replace the laser.

193 Serial Number Mismatch Description: There is a mismatch, detected on booting, between the laser serial numbers in NVRAM and the laser EEPROM. NON-FATAL. Recovery: If a new laser has been fitted, this is a normal warning. The error will not appear on the next reboot. If a new laser has not been fitted, reboot the engine and check if the warning appears again. This error does not prevent the engine from operating. 194 Laser Head Board Problem Description: There is a hardware problem affecting the laser EEPROM. NONFATAL. Recovery: Reboot the engine and check if the warning appears again. This error does not prevent the engine from operating. 199 Drum Temperature too High Description: The temperature read by the drum temperature sensor is higher than 40 C. The temperature sensor is mounted on the FPD board and read by the LCB. FATAL. Recovery:
1. To keep the machine going temporarily, disable Temperature Compensation

in the engine and reboot. This will allow plates to be exposed until the fault is fixed.
2. Replace the FPD board. 3. Replace the LCB.

CODE AND ERROR

210 Fatal Error 225 Data Timeout 240 Edge Detect Late Error

205

Non-Fatal Error Description: The traverse has detected a position error when moving to a required position (usually start expose, but it could be anywhere). The system will attempt to recover on the next traverse move. NON-FATAL. Recovery:
1. Override the interlocks. 2. Open the user door and run the trav_test diagnostic. Observe the LED on

the traverse encoder readhead and ensure it remains green at all times. It may switch off or turn red at the datum actuator, which is normal. If the LED goes amber or red, wipe the encoder strip with a clean dry cloth to remove any dust. If the LED still goes amber or red, adjust the height of the readhead using the blue plastic height setting gauge. If the LED still goes amber or red after this procedure, carefully examine the encoder strip for digs or scratches; if any damage is seen, contact FFEI.
3. Check the position of the ball cage. With the traverse at the user end, the

ball cage should align with the end of the upper V-groove when the end of the upper V groove is aligned with the last bolt in the lower V-groove (refer Luxel V-6 CTP Installation Manual). If the ball cage is found to be more than 10 mm out of position, run the traverse levelling procedure as detailed in the installation manual.

2 TRAVERSE ERRORS

210

Fatal Error Description: The traverse has detected a position error. Check for any plates in the machine or obstructions to the traverse carriage and reboot the system. FATAL. Recovery:
1. Override the interlocks 2. Open the user door and run the trav_test diagnostic. Observe the LED on

the traverse encoder readhead and ensure it remains green at all times (it may go off or turn red at the datum actuator, which is normal). If the LED goes amber or red, wipe the encoder strip with a clean dry cloth to remove any dust. If the LED still goes amber or red, adjust the height of the read-head using the blue plastic height setting gauge. If the LED still goes amber or red after this procedure, carefully examine the encoder strip for digs or scratches; if any damage is seen, contact FFEI.
3. Check the position of the ball cage. With the traverse at the user end, the

ball cage should align with the end of the upper V-groove when the end of the upper V-groove is aligned with the last bolt in the lower V-groove (refer to installation manual). If the ball cage is found to be more than 10 mm out of position, run the traverse levelling procedure as detailed in the installation manual.
4. If the problem remains, check the traverse for obstructions. Typical causes

are a damaged wiper on the traverse motor shaft (replace if damaged), the screws that attach the traverse service extensions not being fully tightened, or the umbilical cable snagging in the cable tray.
5. If the problem persists, measure the voltage at MSB1 PL6 pin 3 with respect

to pin 7. The voltage should be 36 V +5 %/-10 %; if outside this range check the V6_slave_pwr cable and the interlock box.
6. If the error persists, replace the umbilical cable. 7. If the error persists, replace the STB. 8. If the error persists, replace the traverse motor.

215

Invalid Status Description: Traverse invalid status. The system software is unable to obtain a valid status for the traverse subsystem. The system will attempt to recover on the next traverse move. NON-FATAL. Recovery: Reboot the machine if the error re-occurs.

225

Data Timeout Description: Traverse has stopped at end of travel but there is more image data. FATAL. Recovery: Reboot the machine, and reject the job and plate. Download the job again.

LUXEL P LATESETTER 3

235

Edge Detect Error Description: The edge detect failed to trigger. FATAL Recovery:
1. Remove the plate, reboot the machine and retry the job. 2. Look down the drum and check that the edge detect laser illuminates the

white strip.
3. Run traverse/halt and traverse/medirq. Check that the edge detect laser is

on.
4. Connect a multimeter to the test points on the Edge Detect board. 5. Check that the voltage, when illuminating the white strip, is typically 4 VDC. 6. Load a plate into the drum from the PCI or MMI. 7. Move the traverse manually backwards and forwards over the plate edge,

and check on the terminal that the edge is seen each time.
8. Replace the Edge Detect Assembly. 9. If the error persists, call FFEI Customer Support (UK).

240

Edge Detect Late Error Description: Edge detect function does not detect drum/plate edge until the end of the drum. The edge detect sensor triggered too late. FATAL Recovery:
1. Check that the plate is centered in the drum and there are no obstructions. 2. If the error persists, call FFEI Customer Support (UK).

245

Edge Detect Early Error Description: Edge detect function has triggered too early for the plate position. NON-FATAL. Recovery:

6. Move the traverse slowly along the white strip and check that the voltage

does not go below 3 VDC. A low voltage indicates contamination.

7. If the white strip is contaminated, clean it as described in the Engineers Ref-
