Learning Objective: Students will be able to solve subtraction word problems by writing the correct number sentence and representing the correct number of objects. Accommodations: Students will participate with the class as a whole and in small groups. Challenging questions will be asked for those that find the work unchallenging. If a student is struggling during small groups, the teacher will guide them in the correct direction and

show more examples when needed. For students that struggle, the teacher may also create word problems for them that they are able to work through. Materials: Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar? By Bonnie Lass and Philemon Sturges Cookie Worksheets (22) Cookie Crisps in individual bags for each student (22) Procedures: 1. Students will come to the carpet and sit quietly on their spots. 2. Teacher will introduce the book Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar? And explain that the students need to listen closely for words about subtracting, or taking away. 6. When finished, the teacher will ask students questions about the story. a. What words did you hear that made you know they were subtracting? b. Who took the cookies from the cookie jar? Did they keep them to themselves? 7. The teacher will explain to the students that even though we are using the words taking away that does not mean we are allowed to take away from our classmates. 8. As a class, word problems made by the teacher will be worked out on the SmartBoard. 9. Then, students will go to small groups and they will complete their own cookie jar worksheet. a. Students will create number sentences on the worksheet and use Cookie Crisps to correctly show the number sentence. Activity Analysis: Reading the bookthe students will listen for subtraction vocabulary throughout the book. The students will enjoy the repetition in this book and will most likely join in while the teacher is reading. Technology will not be used to read this book because the teacher will be able to read it with enthusiasm. Taking away from their own cookie jarthe students will create their own number sentences in order to show subtraction. Students will enjoy getting hands on with the cookies and counting them out.
