Objectives:
1. To think of seeds in a mathematical context
2. To review solving multiplication and division word problems
3. To engage in a mathematical story read aloud through discussion
Understandings:
1. Students will be able to discuss the purpose of seeds while in math class, and will witness
how what they are learning in math lends itself to science.
2. Students will be able to review their knowledge of multiplication and division number
stories and write out their procedure for solving the problem.
3. Students will be able to listen to and discuss the mathematical story read aloud to them.
Assessment:
Word problems and how the students explain their thinking in writing
Observation of students while working: are they comfortable using realia to solve the
problems
Instruction:
1. Read students Anno's Magic Seeds, stopping throughout the text to check students'
understandings of the story and the math involved. 15-20 minutes
2. Once finished, have students turn and talk to discuss how the book connects to what they
have been learning in science about plants. 5 minutes
3. Have 4 students share their responses with the group. 10 minutes
4. Say to students, "We will now be splitting up into pairs of your choosing to answer word
problems based on this story. Also you will need to explain in writing how you solved
each problem. Please keep in mind a problem you feel confident in because we will go
over the answers together as a class and I would like you to show each other how you
solved your problems. Does anyone have any questions? 5 minutes - accounting for
students to ask questions
5. Circulate around the room as students work, aiding them with any questions they may
need further assistance with. Prompt students who seem lost or off task. 25 minutes
6. Gather the students back together at their desks. Have one pair of students come up for
each problem to demonstrate to the class how they solved each problem. Answer
questions and clarify any questions or misconceptions as they go. The students should
have all the answers completed and corrected by the end of this time. 25 minutes
Differentiation:
Students will be able to manipulate real seeds in order to help solve the word problems if
they need to touch the seeds.
Materials:
25 copies of the packet
copy of Annos Magic Seeds book by Mitsumasa Anno
White board
White board markers
Sponge Activity:
Students may work on their science end of the plant unit assessment projects
