Chronosystem Influences on the Peer Group: Play/Activities and the Development of Friendship

Instructor: Kathy Campbell Grade Level: Community College Course: Education 204 Families, Communities and Culture Unit: Chapter 8 Ecology of the Peer Group Lesson Title: Characteristics of a Childs Play/Activities as they Age and the Development of Friendship Curriculum State Standards: Principle 7: Instructional Planning Skills o The teacher plans and prepares instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals. Principle 8: Assessment of Student Learning o The teacher understands, uses, and interprets formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and advance student performance and to determine program effectiveness. Objectives: Students will be able to: Identify the stages of developmental play in early childhood Understand how peer activities change throughout early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence Identify and describe the various stages of friendship Materials needed: Child, Family, School, Community textbook by Roberta Burns Notebook w/ writing instrument for taking notes Power Point presentation (for lecture)

Introduction (2 min) Introduce myself and the lesson we will be going over today Go over lesson objectives Prompt students with the question: Relying on what you already know, what are some characteristics and differences you have witnessed in the way a child plays or interacts with their peers, depending on their age? Give students a minute to think about it, and then have them share their experience with a partner or write down thoughts in their journal to share in the Blackboard discussion board once lesson is completed. Power Point Lecture (10-15 minutes) Different slides for information on each bullet-point with pauses between some slides for student to reflect on the information presented Go over pgs. 292-294 and describe how playing can contribute to developmental outcomes. Describe developmental changes in social play during early childhood o Solitary, Onlooker, Parallel, Associative and Cooperative Describe play by type of activity characteristics o Imitative Play, Exploratory Play, Testing Play, and Model-Building Play o Rough and tumble play and superhero/heroine play Go over various peer activities and their different characteristics as a child ages on pgs. 294-297. o Infant/Toddler, Early Childhood, Middle Childhood and Adolescent Peer Activities Outline and describe how friendships are developed in children on pgs. 297298 o Early Childhood and momentary friendship o Early/Middle Childhood and one-way assistance o Middle Childhood and two-way, fair-weather cooperation o Middle Childhood/Adolescence and intimate, mutually shared relationships o Adolescence to Adulthood and autonomous interdependent friendships Close (2 min) Review quick summary of the lesson and go over instructions for assessment Check for Understanding (10 min) Students will take a quiz that can be taken online at https://testmoz.com/188570/ Once they are completed with the assessment, students will reply to the discussion board in Blackboard stating that they completed the exam and include any additional comments they may have about the lesson.
