2:10 The students were sitting on the rug around K, who was leading a discussion on the United Nations. Students asked lots of questions about which counties (and cities! ) are in it! K dismissed student to their desks; Mrs. Jarrett informed me that they are having technological issues with the computer/Promethean board. She and Katie worked on getting those resolved while students worked on a word search about the concepts K was previously teaching. Math coach was in the room to assist a few students. Computer started working again! 2:22 MrsJ asks students how many words they found, directs them to put away their folders, introduces "guests in the classroom." Says Ms Becker will teach them next. 2:25 K-- what kind of technology have you yes heard of? Students answer with lots of good ones! (Good way to get them involved!) calls on lots of students, lots of volunteers. MsJ encourages a quiet student to speak louder. K explains how different countries have different systems of education. Shows pictures from Mexico & India. Kids are engaged! Comment: pictures are KEY to this information! So glad you did this! 2:33 Mr. Rothke talks about Indonesia and Thailand and how technology is very helpful when he teaches English as a second language. 2:40 Katie takes back over, explains exit ticket (3-2-1). Students work on it while they ask Mr. R more questions. Students continue to say the words Mr. R taught them. 2:44 Katie explains coin drive to students. Mrs. J assists because students seem to be a bit confused. Explains why its difficult to not be able to go to school, how lucky these students are to have free education. Students meanwhile still work on exit ticket. 2:48 K begins to field questions from the exit ticket. Mr. R answers them. (How long to get there, what kind of houses they live in, did the Indonesians invent anything, do they have babies, how do you say _____?) 2:53 K--"we have time for 3 more questions." 2:57 Mrs J has kids begin to finish up, turn in papers. K picks them up from the students.

Reflection: This was a GREAT lessonthe students were super interested in the topic and especially in hearing about what Vince had to share! (Did I get his last name right???) I could DEFINITELY hear you the whole time. You did a good job calling on students from all areas of the room, calling on different students. Refinements: Try to be as specific as you can when giving explanations, yet still using easy words to understand. (Ex: when explaining that Mexico now passed a bill about distance learning, perhaps say that their government made a law that made it possible for more people to learn by watching classes on computers.) Try not to look at me as much when Im there! I know you are nervous, but just do your thing! When you teach, whether its me or just Mrs. Jarrett in the room, focus on the students! This will happen naturally as you become more comfortable in front of the class.
