Grade Four: Keyona Grade Five: Dru Congratulations!

March 2014
Hello 4th & 5th grade families! I am writing to you as the new student teacher in Mrs. Dells classroom, Miss Pinkham. I am currently working toward my masters degree in Elementary Education through Frostburg State University and will graduate this coming May. As a part of my training, I am responsible for observing Mrs. Dell and gradually taking over full day instruction. During the fall semester, I was an intern here at Emma K. Doub in Mrs. Chambers first grade classroom. I am excited to be continuing my placement at Doub and working with your student. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions you have through the use of student planners. This past month, 5th grade students headed to Outdoor School, while 4th grade students composed writing pieces for the Maryland Municipal League If I were Mayor I would writing contest. Between Integrated Arts lessons, MSA Prep, and Career Caf Luncheons we have a lot going on this month! Please remember to check planners daily. Homework assignments and behavior notes will be recorded daily to ensure open communication between home and school. Cheers,

Writing
Literary Essays This month we are beginning a new unit in writing. In this unit students will learn the necessary tools to write literary essays. In a literary essay, students explore the messages and meanings in a piece of literature. At the end of the unit, students will be able to compose their own literary essays to communicate their opinions about a text and discuss why an author wrote what they did.

Spelling City & ScootPad

Students are now practicing spelling words using an online a program called Spelling City. This site can be accessed at home as well as in school! Students are familiar with this program and can find their just right list of weekly words. We are now using an additional resource called ScootPad. Students practice reading and math using this online application. It works well on both a computer and a tablet. ScootPad aligns perfectly to Common Core Standards, and it is kid friendly.
