LESSON PLAN FIVE Summative Assessment Lesson duration: 90 Rationale This lesson aims to give students an opportunity to teach

others about the topic of volume and capacity. It also allows the teacher to use summative assessment to see the students understandings of the topic. The lesson is very student directed and aims to meet different learning styles and will allow all students to have a go and demonstrate what they know. This lesson also aims to incorporate students prior knowledge and real life experiences so that the learning is more contextualised for students and in turn more beneficial. minutes Stage 2 Year 3 Syllabus Outcomes MS2.3 - Unit One Estimates, measures, compare and records volumes and capacities using litres, millilitres and cubic centimetres. MS2.3 Unit 2 (millilitres and displacement) Estimates, measures, compares and records volumes and capacities using litres, millilitres and cubic centimetres WMS2.2 Applying strategies WMS2.3 - Communicating WMS2.4 - Reasoning WMS2.5 - Reflecting Prior Knowledge Risk Assessment Resources Measuring jugs Students have learnt about the concepts of There is a very low risk of injury during this volume, capacity and displacement and have lesson. Find the key concepts in the brainstorm, which should include; Volume The space that an object takes up - How to measure volume using formal and informal units - How we use volume in our everyday lives Capacity How much an object can hold - How to measure capacity using formal and informal units - How does capacity relate to volume - How we use capacity in our everyday lives Displacement Movement of water - How displacement relates to volume and capacity - How do you use the concept of displacement to find volumes of objects - How do you measure displacement - When do you see displacement in your everyday lives 3) Students will work together to create a television show about the concept of volume and capacity, to teach younger students. Students will choose different topics from the list and create a segment of the television

observing students as they create their television show using an annotated class list to mark down any significant information. The teacher will then use the video recording to assess students on their understanding of the unit, based on a marking rubric (appendix seven).

*Note* - The assessment should focus on the indicators for this lesson. When observing the teacher can use some form of note taking for easier recall. The teacher should reflect on this lesson, its implementation and assessment to see what worked and what didnt as well as where students are up to so that this can guide further planning. The teacher will

show. All students need to work together to structure the television show so that the concepts are sequenced and build upon prior knowledge. Students must also work together to see if their understanding of the concepts are correct. The teacher will be there to help and guide the students, but this should be as much as possible a student led activity, so the teacher can assess students understandings. 4) Students will perform their television show and the teacher will record the show for assessment. 5) Students will write a short paragraph in their workbooks about their learning throughout the unit. The concepts they have learnt, what they liked best and what they still may want to know.

also use the reflection paragraph to assess students understandings of the concepts covered in the units.
