Music Program of Study Overview Curriculum & Instruction


Iwouldteachchildren,music,physicsandphilosophybutmoreimportantlymusic,forthepatternsin musicandalltheartsarethekeystolearning.Plato Music Overview In each Alberta Program of Studies for Music the rational states, The systematic development of musical skills, knowledge and perception is fundamental to the total development of the individual. Each program strives to develop a connection between music and students insight into their own emotional development. This can be achieved through performing, listening or composing music. The program is divided into three main sections, elementary, junior high and senior high school. Junior high and high school both split into three different programs; general music, choral music and instrumental music. Each individual program has its unique way of outlining outcomes. Elementary Grade 1 - 6 Implementation year 1989 Divided by General Learner Outcomes which include: Concepts: rhythm, melody, harmony, form and expression Skills: Listening, moving, singing, playing instruments, reading, writing and creating Attitude: To create an important and long lasting enjoyment for music. Specific Learner Outcomes are divided by grade 1-6 which, uses a scaffolding approach to learn outcomes and continue that skill with development. Example of Specific Learner Outcome Layout

Junior High Level I, II and III implemented year 1988 Three different strands: Instrumental, Choral and General Music Each if divided further into levels Level I Level II Level III Within each of the different strands, they have a variety of different modules that must be covered Examples: General Learner Outcomes: Playing/Singing Listening Reading Creating Valuing The program of studies is only a summary of each three strands online, you have to go find the Curriculum Guide for each strand to get the Specific Learner Outcomes To meet many of the specific learner outcomes objectives you can meet them by performing specific repertoires, reading music and studying traditional and modern music. High School Level IV, V, VI Three different strands: Instrumental(1991): Program of studies only has specific learner outcomes for wind/percussion
programs. Strings must reference the Curriculum Guide.

Specific learner outcomes become more advanced than junior high, yet build and improve on previous GLOs and SLOs
