ENGINE "Engine" was originally a term for any mechanical device that converts force into motion.

the term engine typically describes devices, like steam engines and internal combustion engines, that burn or otherwise consume fuel to perform mechanical work by exerting a tor ue or linear force to drive machinery that generates electricity, pumps water, or compresses gas. !ince the largest consumers on a rotary drilling rig are the hoisting and the circulation system, these components determine mainly the total power re uirements. "t usual drilling operations, the hoisting #lowering and lifting the drill string, casings, etc.$ and the circulation system are not operated at the same time. %herefore the same engines can be engaged to perform both functions. &odern drilling rigs are powered by internal'combustion engines. In the past, drilling rigs were powered by external combustion engines. %he internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of a mixture of fuel vapors and oxygen #usually taken free from air$ occurs in a combustion chamber, and the flue gases evolves into a motor mechanism #with pistons or palettes$. If the flue gases transmit their heat to another gas #steam, nitrogen or air$ then the engine will be with external combustion type. In accordance with the universal law of gases, the expansion of the high temperature gases#which resut from the combustion process$ directly applies force to a movable component of the engine, such as pistons or turbine blades. %his force is moving the above mentioned parts over a distancem generating useful mechanical energy, this being the purpose of the engine. (ombustion can be intermittent #such as the linear four'stroke or two'stroke piston engines or the )ankel rotary engine$ or coutinuous#such as the gas turbines$. http*++www.youtube.com+watch,v-(hxs./0xi1g 2iesel engines have the highest thermal effiency compared to any interna or external combustion engine. %herefore, diesel engines are the most common source of power for rotary rigs. 3'44 -56.1 &pa Natural gas engines are also used, as well as turbines, which are capable of producing energy on'site.%hese solutions involve the existence of hydrocarbon gas supply through a pipe.
