Stage 3: Learning Plan

D.8.5, A.8.4, B.8.5, B.8.15, B.8.18 Observations- Students will keep track of their individual actions as well as others actions that are affecting the environment Explore what a landfill consists of and how long things take to biodegrade. Start observation journal on what they use on a daily basis (students will be keeping track of the resources they use over the course of the unit). Students will complete a worksheet using analysis skills on how a person can reduce what they use/ buy.

Students will use the internet to research ways other people have reused items. Students will have different art projects to choose from in which they reuse items brought from home.

B.8.10, D.8.5, A.8.4, B.8.15 Students will engage in a simulation using their research to decide what items Milwaukee, other states, and other countries would recycle (chart). Recycling simulation- students will organize items into what they would put in a recycling bin and what they would throw away. After learning what Milwaukee Recycling accepts, they will repeat the activity. Students will research acceptable recyclable items in 3 other states and 3 other countries and create a chart comparing/ contrasting. The class will merge the charts together and compare everyones research.

Letter- Each student will write a letter to a friend explaining what they have learned about reducing, reusing, and recycling. They will include facts and statistics about waste and recycling. They will also propose a plan of action their friend should take to help the environment. (homework) Students will watch a video on environments are polluted (water, air, and land). They will then answer how humans have affected these environments.
