Research Project Description: We (Yang Li, Elizabeth Wu and Joshua Yi) are students under the direction of Dr. Julia Voss in the Department of English at Santa Clara University. We are conducting a research study to examine how professors in Santa Clara University think about their students and their teaching. We invite you to participate in our study, which will involve natural engagement with the class including: observing interactions between professor and students and asking and/or responding to questions when applicable. We will record notes in only two media, written note and voice recording, to accurately document our observations. The study will last as long as the class for two consistent weeks. Your participation in this study is voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time. The results of the research study may be shared with others, but your identity will be withheld: we will not identify participants by name or will use pseudonyms. The primary purpose of this research is to evaluate how professors' thoughts about students. If you have any questions concerning the research study, please feel free to contact us by yli1@scu.edu (Yang Li), ewu@scu.edu (Elizabeth Wu) or jsyi@scu.edu (Joshua Yi), or our teacher, Dr. Julia Voss (408-552-4683, jvoss@scu.edu). Because we may use the audio recording to present our research to our classmates and guests from the Santa Clara community, there is a possibility that you will be identified as a participant, even though we will not include your real name in our study and your voice will be disguised (using voice modulation software). However, we will be gathering relatively non-sensitive information: your questions about the teaching, student behavior, overall response to the students, etc. And guests at our end-of-term showcase will only be able to view projects on the spotthey will not be able to copy or download them, minimizing exposure risks.
