day, the homework should not be assigned before we have had a lecture on the material, and the tests should be based off of the complete notes given in class. >

There are a?out an e@ual num?er of comments in the lo;er di'ision courses that there ;as too much lecturing: so + can do more to impro'e my teaching methods1 The acti'e learning approach ;as particularly effecti'e in the upper di'ision course: *+,- 0"!: Genetics: ;here students ;ere eApected to read the teAt: ans;er @uestions a?out the material: and come to class ready to ask @uestions a?out things they found confusing1 This pro'ided lots of time in class for acti'ities and discussions in ;hich students applied content1 +n particular: ;e had time to eAplore a contro'ersial genetic technology in depth $consistent ;ith another goal to make assignments that compel students to make connections ?et;een ?iology and sustaina?ility% and ;e had time to learn ho; to read original scientific papers more effecti'ely and ;rite in that style1 % + mentored Natalie Begel into graduating ;ith all of her courses completed1 + ;asnCt sure she ;as going to ?e a?le to earn a maDor GPA of 1! or higher1 +t ;as not al;ays easy to hold Natalie accounta?le ;hile encouraging her: ?ut + helped to keep her engaged and ;as her ?iggest fan1 This is a sym?ol of the care that + take ad'ising students1 + can tell that it is appreciated ?ased on positi'e responses a?out my @uality as a mentor on the senior eAit inter'ie;s1 + am an eAcellent ad'isor1 2% + feel like + am finally meeting eApectations as department chair1 + am ;illing to lead and am more comforta?le ;ith management1 + ha'e ?een effecti'e at mentoring adDunct faculty so that they can do their ?est and + ha'e ?een a?le to ask for impro'ed performance from more senior faculty ;ho also need reminding or assistance to do ;ell1 + scheduled science faculty meetings t;ice per month and this regularity allo;ed us to
