FH0825 SW 3010 Service Learning Journal Post 1 February 24, 2014 February 24, 2014 I began my service learning

volunteer work at Henry Ford Academy Elementary School located at 10224 3rd Detroit MI 48203. I work under the School Social Worker Andre Criswell. I made it to the school at noon and completed my day at 4pm. Today I worked with Mr. Criswell on creating some new project for the 2nd and 3rd graders. He asked me to share any ideas I might have for his existing program and possible new ones. Since it was black history month and Mr. Criswell was working with the children to show them their history and way school is important, I added that to get the children excited about understanding their history that we should expand the childrens knowledge on our black inventor/heroes. I told him that we should have the children search for with our assistance black leaders besides the main people they talk about year after year. I thought that this way we could show the children that its more leaders than Dr. King. I felt that once they found a new African American leader that that would have them excited that they found out something new that everyone else didnt know. Mr. Criswell was himself excited about the idea. This day was also an interview for me. Mr. Criswell went over my resume with me and asked me questions concerning my history of assisting others and how I was able to be successful or what issues hindered me from being successful.

I observed Mr. Criswells office. I saw that he had a lot of helping skill posted. Mr. Criswell and I plan to move forward with me begin move active upon my next visit to the school. My duties are to work with the school social worker, with two social skills counseling groups on Mondays. The expectation will be that I will help Mr. Criswell prepare materials and plan for the social skills groups which will serve Kindergartners through 5th graders. Also I will be assisting in the dining hall before both groups to serve as a monitor. As a monitor, I will observe a select group of students to help Mr. Criswell prepare appropriate lessons for the social skills group. I will also be asked to help with executing dining hall policies to ensure the safety of all the students during lunch. My last assignment will be to help Mr. Criswell and "A Step Ahead Group" mentoring program by monitoring and planning appropriate initiatives for the after-school program group members.

Date the project will begin and end: Feb. 24, 2014 - Mar. 24, 2014. (2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, & 3/24), 4 HOURS/DATE noon until 4pm
