Teaching Philosophies

When you go into teaching it is imperative to have a teaching philosophy. A philosophy of Education is a set of ideas and beliefs that guides teachers actions and provides framework for thinking about educational issues. If a teacher does not have this structure and framework implemented before they start teaching it would be impossible to perform the job. It is very important for this to be in place before they start the job. Having this philosophy will showcase the teachers strengths and weaknesses and they will have a reference to reflect upon while teaching. When deciding which philosophy that will work best for me, I had to look back at my past education. I had to look at what I learned from past teachers and think of how it helped me to learn. During a students educational career they encounter several different teachers with several different teaching styles and philosophies. I made my decision to implement my teaching philosophy reflecting on my past education and teachers. I also had to look at myself and decide on what I think would showcase my strengths and teaching beliefs. When I look back at what I experienced as a student and what I believe that I can pass along to students then it is time to choose a philosophy that would fall into those categories. I would choose to use the teaching philosophy of Progressivism as my philosophy for teaching. Progressivism is a philosophy that emphasizes real world problem solving and individual development. I feel that each student is different, and learns at a different pace. I feel that the purpose of schooling is

to develop students as completely as possible. This would include physical, intellectual, socially and emotionally. I feel that this philosophy would help get students prepared for life and give them a more well-rounded educational experience than a traditional perennialism philosophy. I also believe that the progressivism philosophy will also give students a different way of learning. This real world education can help the students relate to subjects by seeing examples that are outside of the box. Instead of the students sitting and listening to lectures and lessons all day, this progressive philosophy will make learning more fun and give them hands on examples to help them learn their lessons. If you can find examples of real world teaching aids that the students can visualize then it can make learning fun and something they can use beyond the class. When I become a teacher in a few years I will look back at this philosophy and relate it to my curriculum. I may decide to add to this philosophy and make adjustments. As I continue through my education to reach my teaching degree I will obtain much more knowledge. If during my continued education I find something that I can add to this philosophy than I will make adjustments to it. I am sure I will encounter other teachers, during my schooling and once I get into the field that will influence me and teach me. I may find something by watching their teaching styles and philosophies that affects me and I will implement into my own philosophy.
