Week 2: Day 3 Unit: Brave New World (Dystopian Novel Study)

Hook/Introduction: (25 minutes) Administer the quizzes. Briefly explain expectations for quiz and the test-writing-rules. Make sure everyone has a pencil and a lined piece of paper. Lesson: 1. (3-5 minutes) Have everyone stand up. Say, If your parents are from this country, sit down. If your grandparents are from this country, sit down. If your great grandparents are from this country, sit down. Etc. Do this until everyone is seated. Note to the students that everyone is different, comes from different backgrounds, different heritages, and different countries. Have some students share where their great grandparents are from. 2. (5 minutes)Talk about some differences between cultures in the world. Hand out and go through Respecting Cultural Diversity with the class. Have some students read it aloud. 3. (5 minutes) Open up a class discussion of the article they just read. Ask for show of hands: Who has ever felt teased for their background? Who has ever felt teased for having a difference? Who has ever talked about their background with their peers? What kinds of conversations have you had about differences and cultural diversity? Whos ever met someone from another country? How many languages did he or she speak? What kinds of stories did they tell about where they are from? 4. (5-7 minutes) Ask: Based on the stand up sit down activity, is it fair to assume that there is no one else on this planet who has the same history has as you do? Is it fair to assume that there is no one else on this planet who is quite like you? Why or why not? Ask: Who engages with people online? Did you know that you are a part of a global culture? In the future, you will be working with people from all over the world, all of whom have different backgrounds, cultures, appearances, and habits than you. What sort of websites do you find interesting? What subjects in school do you find interesting? 5. (5 minutes) Show Did You Know?/Shift Happens (4 mins, 21 sec). Discuss it with the class. Get their opinions. 1. (10 minutes) Ask for students who brought their chapter 8 questions to class to get out their homework for homework check and then for them to get into groups of 5-6 to go over their

answers together and share their post-reading responses. Students who did not do their questions/pass homework check can keep working on their reading at their desk. 2. (3-5 minutes)Have students back at their seats and ask: What did you think of chapter 8? What questions do you still have? 6. Hand out to students their chapter 9 and 10 reading questions and let them have the last portion of class to read. Have them consider cultural diversity and how it is being shown in the novel and in this chapter. Remind them to bring their homework to next class for discussion groups.
