Week 4: Day 4 Movie Unit: Brave New World (Dystopian Novel Study)

Time Frame: 75 minutes Curricular Expectations: Reading and Literature Studies - Reading for meaning 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8 Oral Communication Reflecting on Skills and Strategies 4.1 SWBAT: Students will be critically analyzing the movie vs their interpretation of the novel. Knowledge and Understanding: Students will be showing their knowledge of the novel by critiquing discrepancies between the movie and novel Application: Students will be applying their knowledge as they jot down notes during the film showing. Preparing for Class: Brave New World movie must be ready Materials for Class: projector and screen, movie (Brave New World), handouts, pencils, entrance cards

Hook/Introduction: (5 minutes) Students will be asked to answer a couple of reflective questions about the movie thus far. They will be asked: What are a couple of major differences you have already seen between the movie and the book? What is one thing you imagined differently when reading the book that is not represented in the movie the same way? Lesson: 1. (2 minute) Students will be getting ready to take notes on the film by using their Themes and Differences handout. During these couple minutes the teacher will advise students that they must create 5 discussion questions for tomorrows class. These questions should be based off of their hand out Themes and Differences. 2. (60 minutes) Watch film. Bridge: This lesson will bridge into the next where students will finish watching the movie and will move onto discussion about the movie and novel.
