Subject:- Short circuit calculation of transformers First of all we have to kept in mind what is importance of percentage impedence which

is normally given on each and every transformer. Percentage impedence = short circuit impedence Asume we want to do the calculations on 20MVA,66/11kV Power transformer having % impedence of 14% , the following shall be taken in to account:If we apply 14% of high side voltage i.e. 14% of 66kV then the full rated current shall flow in the shorted secondary/ low voltage winding. Rated MVA Rated HV Rated LV % impedence Assume LT supply voltage 20 66 11 14 MVA KV KV % = = = = 20000000 66000 11000 0.14 VA V V V

415 V 20000000 3 X 66000 20000000 3 X11000 = = 174.9598 1049.759 A A

Rated primary current of the transfomer :Rated secondary current of the transfomer :-

On application of 14% of 66kV in HV side then full rated current flows in shorted secondary Wdg = 1049.758556 On application of 1Volt in HV side then full rated current flows in shorted secondary Wdg = 1049.759 66000X 0.14 = 0.113610233 On application of 415 V Lt supply in HV side then full rated current flows in shorted secondary Wdg = 1049.759 X 415 66000X 0.14 = 47.14824681 = 47.15 So total current shall flow in the shorted secondary LV winding = 47.15 Amp And in the primary side, HV winding the current shall flow:= = = So total current shall flow in the shorted secondary HV winding = 7.86 Amp 174.958 X 415 66000X 0.14 7.858041135 7.86

In the same we can calculate the primary side current on short circuit. Current in relay with CT ratio of 200/1 (HV side) = = = = 7.86 200/1 0.0393 47.15 1200/0.578 0.023

Current in relay with CT ratio of 1200/.578 (LV side)
