Normal cells tend to have majority of cells at the interphase stage and have yet to start to divide.

As the table below shows a normal lung has 19 cells in the interphase stage and 1 cell at the anaphase stage. It shows that the cells of normal lungs are ninety five percent at rest with 5 percent dividing. In comparison to a cancerous lung which has 18 cells at the interphase stage, 1 at anaphase stage and 1 at the telophase stage or ninety percent at rest with ten percent dividing. A normal stomach has the same percentage of cells at rest and dividing as a cancerous lung. These numbers drastically increase in a cancerous stomach. As shown in table, a cancerous stomach is dividing at a higher percentage with twenty percent of cells dividing. The cancer that shows the most aggressive growth is ovarian cancer, seventy five percent of cells dividing and twenty five percent at rest. So using the figures of ovarian cancer we can see why the increases of ovarian cancer patients have increased in the last ten years. According to all the data compiled the cancerous tissues have a higher mitotic index due to the cells going through several stages and splitting at a higher rate. Some of the factors associated with the different types of cancer are listed. Factors associated with lung cancer are: cigarette smoking, exposure to radiation and/or radon, exposure to industrial substance such as asbestos and exposure to second hand smoking. Factors associated with ovarian cancer are: increased risks in progression of age, women who have never had children are higher risks,...

Normal cells have a larger number of cells that are in the interphase stage. It appears that the majority are cells that are in that particular stage, as the normal lung contained 19 interphase cells and one anaphase cell. However, the cancerous lung contained 18 interphase cells, 1 anaphase cell and one telophase cell. Ovarian cancer shows the most aggressive growth. According to calculations based upon the research information provided, the majority of the cells divide while a minimal amount of the cells are at rest. Also, cancerous cells have a higher mitotic index.

1. Based on your data and observations, what are some of the Differences between normal cells and cancer cells?

Normal cells have a larger number of cells that are in the interphase stage. It appears that the majority are cells that are in that particular stage, as the normal lung contained 19 interphase cells and one anaphase cell. However, the cancerous lung contained 18 interphase cells, 1 anaphase cell and one telophase cell.

2. Which type of cancer shows the most aggressive growth? Explain.

Ovarian cancer shows the most aggressive growth. According to calculations based upon the research information provided, the majority of the cells divide while a minimal amount of the cells are at rest. Also, cancerous cells have a higher mitotic index.

3. When studying cell division in tissue samples, scientists often calculate a mitotic index, which is the ratio of dividing cells to the total number of cells in the sample. Scientists often calculate the mitotic index to compare the growth rates of different types of tissue. Which type of tissue would have a higher mitotic index, normal tissue or cancerous tissue? Explain.

As stated in the previous response, cancerous cells have the higher mitotic index. This is due to the stages that the cells go through and the high rate of splitting.
