Industrial Profile
Introduction
The Beginning of New Era…
With the invention of the wheel in 4000 BC, man’s journey on the road of
mechanized transport had begun. Since then he continually sought to devise an
automated, labor saving machine to replace the horse. Innumerable attempts
reached conclusion in the early 1760s with the building of the first steam driven
tractor by a French Captain, Nicolas Jacob Cugnot. It was however left to Karl Benz
and Gottlieb Damlier to produce the first vehicles powered by the internal
combustion engine in 1885. It was then that the petrol engine was introduced, which
made the car a practical and safe proposition. Then onwards, it has been one big
journey...on the roads
Indian Agricultural Equipment Industry
India’s agricultural sector is one of the most significant components of the country’s
economy, though its share in the GDP has been decreasing over the years. Nearly
60 per cent of India’s population is dependent on agriculture for its livelihood.
Performance of the agricultural sector continues to have a crucial impact on the
prices of essential goods and market demand for various consumer products.
Agricultural Equipment industry plays a key role in supporting the performance of the
agricultural sector in India. Farming activities are increasingly getting mechanized,
and the availability, quality and performance of agricultural equipment has an
increasing impact on improving the output and productivity of the agricultural sector.
While India manufactures and deploys a range of agricultural equipment across the

industry value chain, tractors and tillers are the two that constitute the bulk of the
industry.

The Indian agricultural equipment industry covers the gamut of equipment used
for different activities across the agriculture value chain. The key activities along the
value chain and the equipment used in each stage are depicted below. This report
focuses on the tractors and tiller segment as they constitute the majority of the Indian
agricultural equipment industry.

The industry structure spans both tiny rural units and MNCs
The manufacture of basic agricultural implements is largely by village artisans and
tiny units, small scale industries and the State Agro-Industrial Development
Corporations. The traditional artisans and small scale industries rely upon their own
experience, user’s feedback and government owned research and development
institutions for technological support. They typically operate out of their own homes
or basic establishments that are often without regular utility services.

Medium scale industries operate in their own premises with adequate infrastructure,
sometimes forming a part of an industrial estate. They also have manufacturing and
marketing facilities and employ skilled manpower. Products such as diesel engines,
electric motors, irrigation pumps, sprayers and dusters are produced in this sector.
Complex products such as land development machinery, tractors, power tillers, post
harvest and processing machinery and dairy equipment are manufactured by large
players in the organized sector. These firms typically have large manufacturing
facilities, professional marketing network of dealers and provide effective after sales
service. They also have in-house research and development facilities or have joint
ventures with advanced countries for technology up gradation. Mahindra &
Mahindra’s

Farm Equipment Sector (FES), which designs, develops, manufactures and markets
tractors for Indian and overseas markets, is the largest manufacturer of tractors in
India.

Mechanization of agriculture has been growing

Over the years, the share of human and animal power in agriculture has reduced
drastically, paving the way for a variety of equipment to emerge. Many of these are

Wheels of Change

India had its date with this wonderful vehicle first time in 1898. Then for the next fifty
years, cars were imported to satisfy domestic demand. Between 1910 and 20's the
automobile industry made a humble beginning by setting up assembly plants in
Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai. The import/assembly of vehicles grew consistently
after the 1920's, crossing the 30,000 mark in 1930. In 1946, Premier Automobile Ltd
(PAL) earned the distinction of manufacturing the first car in the country by
assembling 'Dodge DeSoto' and 'Plymouth' cars at its Kurla plant. Hindustan Motors
(HM), which started as a manufacturer of auto components graduated to
manufacture cars in 1949. Thanks to the Licence Raj which restricted foreign
competitors to enter the Indian car market, Indian roads were ruled by Ambassador
Car from Hindustan Motors and the Fiat from Premier Auto Ltd. for many of the initial
years.

In 1952, the GOI set up a tariff commission to devise regulations to develop

an indigenous automobile industry in the country. After the commission submitted its
recommendations, the GOI asked assembly plants, which did not have plans to set
up manufacturing facilities, to shut operations. As a result General Motors, Ford and
other assemblers closed operations in the country. The year was 1954 and this

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

decision of the government marked a turning point in the history of the Indian car
industry. The GOI also had a say in what type of vehicle each manufacturer should
make. Therefore, each product was safely cocooned in its own segment with no
fears of any impending competition. Also, no new entrant was allowed even though
they had plans of a full-fledged manufacturing program. The restrictive set of policies
was chiefly aimed at building an indigenous auto industry. However, the restrictions
on foreign collaborations led to limitations on import of technology through technical
agreements. In the absence of adequate technology and purchasing power, the car
industry grew at a snail's pace in the 60’s. The demand for cars in 1960 was to the
tune of 15,714. In the next two decades the number increased to 30,989 i.e. a CAGR
of only 3.5 per cent.

The Indian automobile industry can be broadly classified into:

 2 /3 Wheelers
 Passenger Cars
 Commercial Vehicles (LCV/HCV/MCV)
 UV (Utility vehicles)
 Tractors

Customer centric approach

In there 16 years of experience Shimoga trailers have designed the trailers based on
the customer need , they have made many changes in the design of the trailers
according to the task which as to be performed by the trailers. Some trailers are
fitted with the blade set which acts as the shock absorber which will gives extra
support and height to the trailer the trailers are designed on the basis of the
geographical factors some regions have ghats ,ups, downs and flat regions some
times the trailers has to be less weighted and small in length due to the ghats , and
some trailers need to be heavy to carry the agricultural product like sugarcane etc
depending on the load and geography the trailers are designed

They are of the opinion that the customer is the king, who makes or breaks an
organization. Abiding by this policy, there workers work in proximity with farmers and
understand their needs and requirements. They then design the products based on
these specifications to completely satisfy the customers. Feedback and suggestions
from their end are extremely valuable, as they act as guidelines for the company to
improve on its products and processes.

In today’s world of intense competition and rapid dynamism, most of the companies
worldwide are turning their focuses on the customer. Suddenly the customer had

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

succeeded in capturing all the attention of the companies towards him, so much so,
that the once famous maxim, “customer is the god” has become so true and relevant
today. There has been a “paradigm shift” in the thinking of these companies and
none other then the customer has brought this about.

Earlier there was a sellers market, since goods and services were in short
supply and the sellers use to call the shots. But, ever since the advent of the era of
globalization, there has been total transformation in the way the customers being
perceived. Today, marketers are directing their efforts in retaining the customers and
customers’ base. Their focus has shifted towards integrating the three elements
people, service and marketing.

The customer’s importance has assumed imponderable proportions in today’s

world, because of the inherent value that the customers command. A customers can
“make or break” a company. It is the responsibility of every company to see that all
its customers are equally satisfied with them, for one single dissatisfied customer will
tell at least nine others about the dissatisfaction and will spark off a chain reaction
and spell doom for that company. In such scenario, retention of the existing
customers assumes diabolical proportion. Research has thrown light on some
important aspects of customers’ retention it has been proved empirically that
acquiring new customers can cost five times more than the cost involved in satisfying
and retaining current customers.

In the past, the customers was taken for a ride, as there were not many players in
the fields, not much importance was attached to product safety, quality, service and
product appeal. The attitude of the manufacture was that of “caveat – emptor”.
Thanks to the government policies on liberalization, globalization and privatization
(LPG), the market scenario has changed today. Today, the customer has a host of
defense mechanism like the customers protection laws, regulation of the
government, the powerful hands of the organization, customers’ courts, switching to
substitute or competitors that offer at competitive prices, etc. The maxim,” caveat –
emptor” has been replaced by “caveat venditor”.

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

In the past, after sales service was consider as a cost center, Companies were
lethargic in attending to customers complaints. Availability of trainee service personal
and quality genuine spare parts posed serious problems. However, with the rising
competition, there could not be much product differentiation, as price and quality
were comparable and latest technology was to each and every company in the field.
Since, there could not be much differential a tangible assets, the companies
concentrated on the “intangible assets”, namely the “service factor”, which served as
a major differentiator. Today after sales service is an important aspect of every
company, and it is no more considered as a cost center, but considered as a profit
center. Every organization strives hard to retain its existing customers at any cost
since it is five times costly to get a new customer, then to retain an existing
customer. Most of the industries today use of information technology to best services
to their customers.

Product Profile
Shimoga trailers are the pioneers in manufacturing of tractor trailers they have
obtained strong customers loyalty in the 4 districts of Karnataka for trailers. They are
the initiator’s to introduce the agricultural equipments to the Malnad region, some of
there product profile as follows.

Trailers and Tankers

Trailers are the wheeled platform, sometimes equipped with a motor, for conveying
loads in a warehouse or freight yard. They consist of two types’ hydraulics and
normal trailers. Hydraulics have the capacity to lift the payload they are used in
carrying sand ,stones , materials required for construction, agricultural purposes etc
In this type the hydraulic jacks are used with the arm supporter for lifting purpose.
Normal trailers don’t have the capacity of lifting, these are used for the cargo
purpose and they don’t have the hydraulic jack to lift the sleeper or platform.

Tankers these are also trailers but have a doom shaped structures mounted on a
platform, equipped with a tractor or any kind of wheeled engine.

Disc harrow

In agriculture, a set of harrows is an implement for cultivating the surface of the soil.
In this way it is distinct in its effect from the plough, which is used for deeper
cultivation. Harrowing is often carried out on fields to follow the rough finish left by
ploughing operations. The purpose of this harrowing is generally to break up clods
and lumps of soil and to provide a finer finish, a good tilth or soil structure that is
suitable for seeding and planting operations. Such coarser harrowing may also be
used to remove weeds and cover seeds after sowing. Used in one pass to prepare
the soil for seeding. it is also common to use any combination of two harrows for a
variety of tilling processes. Where harrowing provides a very fine tilth, or the soil is

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

very light so that it might easily be wind-blown, a roller is often added as the last of
the set.

Post digger

Tractor auger may also be used in agriculture or animal farming for digging post
holes. These augers are also called an Earth auger or Post digger. Tractor Augers
are attached to a tractor via 3 point hitch with power to the auger drive unit provided
by the tractor engine's PTO shaft.
Field cultivators

Field cultivators are used to complete tillage operations in many types of arable crop
fields. The mail function of the field cultivator is to prepare a proper seed bed for the
crop to be planted into, to bury crop residue in the soil (helping to warm the soil
before planting), to control weeds, and to mix incorporate the soil to ensure the
growing crop has enough water and nutrients to grow well during the growing
season. The implement has many shanks mounted on the underside of metal frame
and small narrow rods at the rear of the machine that smooth field cultivators, one-
to-many hydraulic cylinders raise and lower the implement and control its depth.

MB plough

A major advance in plough design was the mould board plough(American spelling:
Mould board plough), which aided the cutting blade. The coulter, knife or skeith cuts
vertically into the ground just ahead of the share (or frog) a wedge-shaped surface to
the front and bottom of the Mould board with the landside of the frame supporting the
below-ground components. The upper part of the frame carries (from the front) the
coupling for the motive power(horses), the coulter and the landslide frame.
Depending on the size of the implement and the number of furrows it is designed to
plough at one time, there is a wheel positioned to support the frame in the case of a
single-furrow plough there is only one wheel at the front and handles at the rear for
the ploughman to steer

Cage wheel
EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

A device to increase the traction performance of a tractor in wet paddy field,

effectiveness of a cage wheel as a traction aid with driving tyres of agricultural
tractors in wet paddy field. The measurements were made in a wet paddy field in a
hardpan 30-40 cm deep in which tractor are not likely to operate without a traction
aid. The traction developed by individual lugs of a cage wheel decreased due to their
interference.

Trencher
A trencher is used to make trench’s and channels for irrigation purposes which is
needed for irrigation purposes to flow the water for the fields.
A trench is a type of excavation or depression in the ground. Trenches are generally
defined by being deeper than they are wide (as opposed to a wider gully or ditch),
and by being narrow compared to their length (as opposed to a simple hole

About Lathe machine

In woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, and glassworking, a lathe is a

machine tool which spins a block of material so that when abrasive, cutting, or
deformation tools are applied to the block, it can be shaped to produce an object
which has rotational symmetry about an axis of rotation. For many people machines
remain a mystery. But they quicken the pulse of those with engineering blood
coursing through their veins. Take the well-used lathe shown here. The machine is a
feat of engineering in itself, with knurled knobs and cogwheels, nuts, bolts and belts,
winders and wheels, smooth shafts, threaded shafts, levers, and chucks with jaws.

Gas cutter

This is used in cutting the channels into required size of length and breadth, the gas
used here is of normal Liquid Petroleum Gas.

Pressing machine

Pressing machine is used for making the channels strait which are slightly bent and
which are used to give the shape to various mechanical operations

Sheet bending machine

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

These machines are used to bend and cut the very hard metallic sheet which used in
making the doors and body of the trailer.

Drilling machine

It is used to dig the holes on the chasse and other needed surfaces.

Grinding machine

It is used to grind the surface area; it will make a smooth surface on an uneven
surface.

Paint sprayer

This is a gun like structure which is used in painting purposes.

Industry Analysis - Porter's Model

Competitor analysis: analysis of competition how well the market is served.

Marketing mix:

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

A Marketing mix is the division of groups to make a particular product, by pricing,

product, branding, place, and quality. Although some marketers[who?] have added
other P's, such as personnel and packaging, the fundamentals of marketing typically
identifies the four P's of the marketing mix as referring to:

1. Product
2. Price
3. Promotion
4. Place

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

Product

A tangible object or an intangible service that is mass produced or manufactured on

a large scale with a specific volume of units. Intangible products are often service
based like the tourism industry & the hotel industry. Typical examples of a mass
EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

produced tangible object are trailers. A less obvious but ubiquitous mass produced
service is a computer operating system.

Price

The price is the amount a customer pays for the product. It is determined by a
number of factors including market share, competition, material costs, product
identity and the customer's perceived value of the product. The business may
increase or decrease the price of product if other stores have the same product.

Place

Place represents the location where a product can be purchased. It is often referred
to as the distribution channel. It can include any physical store as well as virtual
stores on the Internet.

Promotion

Promotion represents all of the communications that a marketer may use in the
marketplace. Promotion has four distinct elements - advertising, public relations,
word of mouth and point of sale. A certain amount of crossover occurs when
promotion uses the four principal elements together, which is common in film
promotion. Advertising covers any communication that is paid for, from television and
cinema commercials, radio and Internet adverts through print media and billboards.
One of the most notable means of promotion today is the Promotional Product, as in
useful items distributed to targeted audiences with no obligation attached. This
category has grown each year for the past decade while most other forms have
suffered. It is the only form of advertising that targets all five senses and has the
recipient thanking the giver. Public relations are where the communication is not
directly paid for and includes press releases, sponsorship deals, exhibitions,
conferences, seminars or trade fairs and events. Word of mouth is any apparently
informal communication about the product by ordinary individuals, satisfied
customers or people specifically engaged to create word of mouth momentum. Sales
staff often plays an important role in word of mouth and Public Relations.

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

Broadly defined, optimizing the marketing mix is the primary responsibility of

marketing. By offering the product with the right combination of the four Ps marketers
can improve their results and marketing effectiveness. Making small changes in the
marketing mix is typically considered to be a tactical change. Making large changes
in any of the four Ps can be considered strategic. For example, a large change in the
price, say from $19.00 to $39.00 would be considered a strategic change in the
position of the product. However a change of $131 to $130.99 would be considered
a tactical change, potentially related to a promotional offer.

The term "Marketing Mix" however, does not imply that the 4P elements represent
options. They are not trade-offs but are fundamental marketing issues that always
need to be addressed. They are the fundamental actions that marketing requires
whether determined explicitly or by default.

Finance

EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

The word finance refers to the concepts of time, money and risk and how they are
interrelated. Banks are the main facilitators of funding through the provision of credit,
EWCM/SGB/PPP
56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

although private equity, mutual funds, hedge funds, and other organizations have
become important. Financial assets, known as investments, are financially managed
with careful attention to financial risk management to control financial risk. Financial
instruments allow many forms of securitized assets to be traded on securities
exchanges such as stock exchanges, including debt such as bonds as well as equity
in publicly-traded corporations.

Finance is used by individuals (personal finance), by governments (public finance),

by businesses (corporate finance), as well as by a wide variety of organizations
including schools and non-profit organizations. In general, the goals of each of the
above activities are achieved through the use of appropriate financial instruments,
with consideration to their institutional setting.

Finance is one of the most important aspects of business management. Without

proper financial planning a new enterprise is unlikely to be successful. Managing
money (a liquid asset) is essential to ensure a secure future, both for the individual
and an organization.

A bank aggregates the activities of many borrowers and lenders. A bank accepts
deposits from lenders, on which it pays the interest. The bank then lends these
deposits to borrowers. Banks allow borrowers and lenders, of different sizes, to
coordinate their activity. Banks are thus compensators of money flows in space.

Corporate finance

Managerial or corporate finance is the task of providing the funds for a corporation's
activities. For small business, this is referred to as SME finance. It generally involves
balancing risk and profitability, while attempting to maximize an entity's wealth and
the value of its stock.

Long term funds are provided by ownership equity and long-term credit, often in the
form of bonds. The balance between these forms the company's capital structure.
Short-term funding or working capital is mostly provided by banks extending a line of
credit.

56
Organizational study- Shimoga Trailers and Impliments.Pvt.Ltd-Shimoga

Another business decision concerning finance is investment, or fund management.

An investment is an acquisition of an asset in the hope that it will maintain or
increase its value. In investment management – in choosing a portfolio – one has to
decide what, how much and when to invest. To do this, a company must:

• Identify relevant objectives and constraints: institution or individual goals, time

horizon, risk aversion and tax considerations;
• Identify the appropriate strategy: active v. passive – hedging strategy
• Measure the portfolio performance

Financial management is duplicate with the financial function of the Accounting

profession. However, financial accounting is more concerned with the reporting of
historical financial information, while the financial decision is directed toward the
future of the firm.

Financial management is a part and partial of the organization function and has a
responsibility of careful planning, successful utilization and optimal allotment of the
company’s financial resources.
