Vocabulary words for Week 4: definitions and examples


1. Chastise- punish (verb) i. The teacher chastised the students for making too much noise.

2. Peering- looking closely (verb) i. I saw the 2nd grader peering through the window at me. 3. Pale- not dark, light (adjective) i. The girls skin was very pale, almost white. 4. Exceptions- things that dont follow the rule or pattern (noun) i. The teacher made an exception and didnt punish the students fro talking in class. 5. Unsettling- describes things that are uncomfortable or make you worry (adjective) i. I had an unsettling feeling that something bad was going to happen. 6. Chastisement- punishment (noun) i. The chastisement e was too much- I will never get in trouble again. 7. Insensitive- not careful of other peoples feelings (adjective) i. My brother is insensitive and hurts my feelings all the time. 8. Chatter- not useful talking (noun/verb) i. The chatter was so annoying, I decided not to listen. ii. They chattered about stupid things. 9. Glanced- looked quickly (verb) i. I glanced over my shoulder to make sure no one was following me. 10. Rarity- something that is very uncommon (doesnt happen often) (noun) i. A perfect student is a rarity. 11. Depth- wisdom or something that is very deep (noun) i. He has a lot of depth to his understanding of English. ii. This lake reaches a great depth. 12. Lurk- to wait or hang around (in a bad way) (verb) i. The man lurked around in the street, ready to cause some trouble. 13. Self-conscious- worried about what people think of you (adjective) i. I felt self-conscious because everyone was looking at me. 14. Honor- respectfulness, full of truth or honesty, responsibility (noun)

Dwelling- house (noun) i. The dwelling was beautiful with lots of windows. 52. Renewal- rest/relaxation (noun) i. Renewal and relaxation are important in order to stay healthy. 53. Solemn- serious/sad (adjective) i. The boy had a solemn look on his face because his mother was very sick.
