Intro to Butyl acrylate

Butyl acrylate is a clear colorless liquid with a characteristic fruity odor. It is readily miscible with most organic solvents. It is readily polymerized and displays a wide range of properties dependent upon the selection of the monomer and reaction conditions. Butyl acrylate is used in the production of homopolymers and co-polymers such as acrylic acid and its salts, esters, amides, methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleates, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene and unsaturated polyesters. Butyl acrylate forms homopolymers and copolymers. Copolymers of butyl acrylate can be prepared with acrylic acid and its salts, amides and esters, and with methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleic acid esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, unsaturated polyesters and drying oils, etc. Butyl acrylate is also a very useful feedstock for chemical syntheses, because it readily undergoes addition reactions with a wide variety of organic and inorganic compounds. When used in latex paint formulations acrylic polymers have good water resistance, low temperature flexibility and excellent weathering and sunlight resistance.
