Upon completing the lesson, English Language Learners will be able to apply adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions in sentences with at least 85% accuracy.

A 50 multiple choice test with short answers

An introductory English course with 20 men and 20 women. 85% of the students are from South America and the other 15% are from Asia. TOEFL ( Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores indicate 100% of the class have scores below average for basic English grammar. Students have a combination of learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.

Learning will take place in a classroom, at a community college, individually and in small groups in 8 classes with each class being 1 hour and 15 minutes long. After completing some worksheet assignments pertaining to grammar concepts notated in performance-based objectives, visual aids such as videos will accommodate visual and auditory learners. Collaboration in small groups will accommodate all the different learning styles. Students will complete assignments from the text for the course in small groups to reinforce what was learned as I facilitate. Then students will work on assignments from the text for the course individually to reinforce what was learned.

First, lesson will be instructor-led to introduce topic. Then students will be placed in small groups to collaborate and interact. Class will be more learner-centered because they will be interacting and collaborating with each other in a classroom setting.

Topic to be taught: adjectives and Adverbs

Discussion-To deepen knowledge Note taking- Advanced organizers will be used for note taking Ongoing assessment-instructor will circulate around room to observe and facilitate students Cooperative learning Students will collaborate and interact to complete a small group activity on topic. Since they are English Language Learners, activity will assist in making conversation. Homework-To reinforce what was taught in class

Instructor will implement lesson to English Language Learners in a classroom 3X a week for an hour and 15 minutes over an 8 week quarter. Graphic organizers, videos, worksheets, and textbook will be materials used throughout the quarter. Lesson will be implemented first through instructor-led. Then students will be placed in small groups. Finally, the class will be learner-centered because the students will be interacting and collaborating with each other. Collaboration will build interest because they will have an opportunity to practice what theyve learned from each other. Academic games will also be used to build interest. Discussion questions and note taking will be constant throughout the course. Since they are English Language Learners with various learning styles, discussions and note taking reinforce concepts.

Materials:

Whiteboard Computer Videos Textbook Worksheets Graphic organizers Rubric Self -evaluations

Questions-Students create own questions based on concepts. Then they exchange questions in small groups. Quizzes-To test mastery of concepts Journal writing-To enhance writing skills. Various topics will be given for elaboration. Graphic organizers-Used for visual representation such as Venn Diagram Discussions-To give opportunities to practice conversation Observations-To assess students understanding of concepts Self and peer evaluations-For intrinsic motivation Academic games-For creating interest

Academic achievement will determine the effectiveness of instructional plan. If students are able to receive 85% or higher on tests given throughout quarter, instruction plan is effective. Student surveys at the end of the quarter will help determine students attitudes toward the instruction plan.

rubric will be used to identify the criteria for examining goals, performance-based objectives and learning outcomes. If majority ( at least 85%) of class received 85% or higher on all exams and activities for class, learning outcomes were achieved. Self-evaluation- Students will also rate their performance on topics. The following will be the rating scale: 1- Have little knowledge of topic 2-Have some knowledge of topic 3-Mastery of topic 4-Demonstrating application above and beyond

If instructional plan is not effective, teacher will modify strategies by adding more reviews and quizzes. Students will also be provided with more homework and more time for questions during discussions. For students who achieved learning outcomes, they will be provided with enrichment of activities. Moreover, students who were unsuccessful will receive remediation activities. My recommendation for future instructional plan is to verify where students fall with the topic before introducing the topic. Therefore, I will provide them with a rating scale to self evaluate before the topic is introduced. That same scale will be used at the completion of topic to demonstrate personal growth.
