Regarding the use of contraceptives, we find no demographic profile that indicates whether a person is in favor or against the use of contraceptives. Furthermore, it is the one subject on which most of the Catholics interviewed differ from the Churchs stated position.
The most controversial subject is gay marriage. On average, 5% more women, 18% more young people and 10% more upper and upper middle class members are in favor of gay marriage compared to their counterparts.

Both African countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, had the most heterogeneous responses across subjects and demographics and these responses were most similar to those of the Catholic Church.
AFRICAN COUNTRIES
The U.S. has the biggest differences across socioeconomic classes. 25% more people of the lower class share the Churchs opinion on divorce compared to upper and upper middle classes. The same goes for gay marriage (24%), marriage of priests (19%) and women in the priesthood (20%).

Generational differences are most evident in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico and Spain. On average and respectively, 12%, 10%, 16% and 11% more people 55 years or older share the Churchs opinion than do young people.

Geographical differences are most evident in Argentina and Mexico. On average, 15% and 11% more people living in rural areas in both countries share the Churchs opinion than do those living in big cities.

METHODOLOGY NOTE A comprehensive survey of 12,038 self-identified Catholics was conducted in 9 languages, across 5 continents and in 12 countries. The countries included in the study were selected after analyzing the Catholic population distribution and concentration around the world. These 12 countries represent 61% of the worlds Catholic population. The overall margin of error for the global aggregated results is 0.9% at the 95% confidence interval.
