Language and Literature Higher Level Paper Two

Time: 2 hours

Answer one essay question only. You must base your answer on at least of the Part 3 works you have studied. Answers which are not based on a discussion of at least two Part 3 works will not score high marks. Your answer should address the ways in which language and context contribute to your reading of each work.

1. A moral or a lesson is a common convention in stories. In what ways and for what purposes have at least two of your chosen authors either adhered to or subverted this convention?

2. Most novels are written to reflect real events in real worlds. Discuss the features that make at least two of the texts you have studied seem realistic (or unrealistic), & explain why realism is appropriate (or inappropriate) to the novels main themes.

3. To what extent do you agree that novels use a clash of opposites to present ideas? Discuss with at least two of the texts you have studied.

4. The best novelists are true historians: they capture the spirit or attitude of a particular time or place more effectively than any reference book. To what extent is this a valid comment for at least two of the texts you have studied?
