The Three Keys to Unlocking Your Ultimate Success

Every human being has vast stores of potential waiting to be unleashed. Whether its a great story, a technological breakthrough or a way to alleviate suffering, we all have a unique gift to offer the world. Many of us die with that gift still locked within us. The fact that you are reading this means you know you have that treasure to bring forth and you dont want to waste it. Welcome to the most exciting journey of your life, your quest to nd and use the keys to unlock your potential!

Beliefs
A belief is nothing more than a sense of certainty about something. Have you ever been certain about an idea or a fact that turned out to be false? Think about the history of cigarettes. Doctors once endorsed them! Beliefs are useful in helping us to function smoothly in a complex, fast-paced world. They free-up energy and brain power for other things. If we were constantly trying to sort through various options on how to behave, wed quickly be overwhelmed and end up cowering in a corner. The belief that People like me behave this way in these situations, gives us a sense of certainty and consistency, allowing us to move through life more easily. The challenge arises when our beliefs become obstacles to our fulllment or happiness. At this point it is useful to examine our beliefs and ask, Is this serving me now? For example, the belief that Big boys dont cry, may have served you well growing up in a tough neighborhood. But now that you are married with daughters, shutting off your emotions can get in the way of relating to your family. Im sure you can think of at least one belief you held strongly for some time, a belief that perhaps saw you through some very trying times, but is now hindering your growth. This is called a Limiting Belief. Write down all your limiting beliefs in the area youd like to change in your life. It might be your relationships or your career. Maybe its in the area of health or tness or even your relationship to money. Once you have your limiting beliefs on the table in black and white, you can begin to address how to change them. Actions
There is no substitute for taking action, for implementing ideas and Going for it! Forward motion is critical not only to build momentum, but to the ability to make course corrections. Making a turn is not possible while standing still. Youll never nd the fork in the road unless you start down the path. Perfection is not the goal. Thats really hard for some of us to grasp. But perfection implies a cast-in-stone stasis, unchanging and forever. That is not reality. In the real world, technology advances, the message morphs, we age and desire different outcomes. Adaptability is more valuable than an attempt at static perfection. What stops people from taking action? Easiest to address is simply not knowing where to start. This is just a matter of strategy, of research and studying what others have done in a similar situation. When put on the spot, its useful to ask yourself, If I knew what to do, what would it be? That allows access to the creative part of your brain that is capable of producing answers out of thin air. The more difcult block to overcome is fear. What do most of us fear? Failure is a big one and most common. Here is the secret to conquering fear of failure. What is failure, really? For most of us it is not getting the result we desire. But every action does produce a result, right? Even the most feeble attempt at something will give you some kind of result. When the result doesnt match what we were trying to achieve, instead of labeling that as failure and being discouraged, it is more useful to view it as an outcome and a learning opportunity to gure out better actions. We all know FedEx as a big company and very successful. On their rst day of business they planned to deliver 179 packages overnight. They delivered seven, ve of which were sent to FedEx by FedEx. So there were 2 actual packages delivered successfully. That was the outcome. Then the analysis and learning began. Giving up because they failed to deliver 172 packages was not an option. Learning from the result of their actions and adjusting their approach was the path to success. This is key to being successful in anything. There are no failures, only outcomes and opportunities. Only action produces results, outcomes. Without action, there is nothing to learn from. First comes a plan, then an action. Next we gather the feedback from the action. Then we analyze what was good and what was bad. Finally, we determine what we can do differently to produce an outcome that more closely matches the goal. This learning cycle is the process of success. It is the only way great businesses, relationships or products get created. A commitment to repeating this process as many times as it takes to produce the desired result is at the core of accomplishment. Without this process and the ability to make useful distinctions, there is no progress towards a goal.

Commitment
Commitment is the binder that holds beliefs and actions together and gives them form. I like to think of a commitment as a sacred decision. Its a decision to do something that you will not back away from or abandon. Have you ever made a true commitment to something? How did that change the way you handled obstacles to upholding that commitment, including fear? Commitment is like a super-power. When you are committed to achieving an outcome or producing a result, your ability to overcome challenges skyrockets. Very little will deter you from reaching your goal. Making a commitment to yourself is the rst step and will give you a measure of power over your fears. The next step is making a public declaration of your commitment, preferably to someone who will not let you off the hook. Once you place yourself in this position, of being held accountable for your commitment, you will bring a whole new level of energy and creativity to fullling your goal. Think about deadlines. Right in the name is the ultimate consequence for falling short. Have you ever waited until the last minute to turn in an assignment? Some people do their best, most creative work under this kind of external pressure. If the only acceptable outcome is reaching the goal, then you will apply all of your talents, time and energy to the task. Ill try or Ill do my best is giving yourself an out. Total commitment seals off all escape routes other than massive action. This is called Accountability. Holding someone accountable is a skill. Not everyone can do this effectively. Since most people arent practiced at holding themselves accountable, they are unable to do it for someone else. They let themselves off the hook and make excuses of why they didnt follow through, and they will do the same for you, their friend. They will listen to your story of misfortune and sympathize rather than get to the root issue of your lack of action. Accountability is a powerful tool when used properly.
