At a time, when our lordly masters in Great Britain will be satisfied with nothing less
than the deprivation of American freedom, it seems highly necessary that something
should be done to avert the stroke, and maintain the liberty, which we have derived from
our ancestors. But the manner of doing it, to answer the purpose effectually, is the point
in question. That no man should scruple, or hesitate a moment, to use arms in defense of
so valuable a blessing, on which all the good and evil of life depends, is clearly my
opinion. Yet arms, I would beg leave to add, should be the last resource….

will think about the

Revolution. What events
finally brought England and
the colonies to war?
Wednesday The ideas of the
Revolution- we’ll look at
the Declaration of
Independence and the
philosophers whose ideas
helped support it.
Thursday We will continue to think
about the ideas of the
Revolution.
Friday I will return the Columbus
essays and we will talk
about writing revision.
Winning the war- how did
the newly formed
Continental Army manage
to win the war and what
role did foreign alliance
play.
Assignment
Read 4.1
Read “Jefferson’s
Declaration of
Independence” and answer
questions.
Read 4.2
Read 4.3 and 4.4.
There will be a test over the
Revolution next Tuesday.
It will be an in class essay.
The question is: At what
point, if any, was the
Revolution inevitable?
Why? You may use an
outline with your thesis and
partial phrases. The only
full sentences you may
include are QUOTES (aside
from your thesis).
