com
Welcome to AP Calculus! I am excited to start a new semester with you all and am looking forward to
working with you. I have high expectations for all of my students. I truly believe that all students can succeed in this class, as long as they work hard, listen during class, perform necessary tasks in class and out of class, and seek help when needed. It is your responsibility to seek help when you feel it is needed. Remember, asking questions is how you learn and there is no question too basic or trivial. I am available for help Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays after school until 2:45, with few exceptions. I strongly urge that you form a study group as soon as possible and establish certain guidelines. We will discuss this further in class. You will need to check your edmodo account every day after 4:00 to see if there are any updates or additional assignments. Your class code is: 4pvry5. Parents can also have access. You can find your parent code on the right hand side of the screen once your child is logged into edmodo.

We will be thoroughly covering both Integration and special Derivatives in the second semester of AP Calculus. We will also use the month before the exam to thoroughly review the entire years worth of content. The following topics will be covered this semester: Integration
Interpretations and properties Fundamental Theorem of Calculus Techniques of anti-differentiation The Natural Logarithm Exponential Functions Applications of anti-differentiation o Volume of Disks o Volume of Washers o Volume of Shells Numerical approximations to definite integral Integration by Parts Trigonometric Integrals Partial Fractions Indeterminate Forms and LHopitals Rule

The following topics have already been covered: Functions, Graphs, and Limits
Analysis of graphs Limits of functions Asymptotic and unbounded behavior Continuity as a property of functions

Derivatives
Concept of the derivative Derivative at a point Derivative as a function Second derivatives Applications of derivatives Computation of derivatives The Natural Logarithm Exponential Functions

Differentiation
Inverse Trigonometric Equations

Materials needed for this class include: 3 ring binder

A 3-prong folder with pockets 3 sheet protectors Loose leaf paper Pencils

It is highly recommended to have:

Grading Policy:

Graphing Calculator (preferably a TI 84 Plus or TI 84 Plus Silver Edition)

All grades for the class will be averaged together as follows: o Homework/Class work units will count as one grade. Each student will get one homework/class work grade per unit. Homework will be graded on completion/effort, accuracy or both the grading method for any particular assignment will not be announced ahead of time so be sure to always do your best! Homework is considered late if it is not turned in at the time of request. Work is NOT accepted after the day it is due unless you are absent. If you are absent you are responsible for getting missed assignments from the assignment board and completing them within 3 days for credit. If you miss a quiz or test, you must make it up within one week of your date of return. It is your responsibility to obtain your missed assignments and complete them in a timely manner. o Each quiz grade will count as two grades. Quizzes will be frequent and unannounced. o Each test or other major grades will count as three grades. Parent Involvement: Parents, you are the most valuable tool I have in educating your child. There are several ways you can help your child be successful in this course. 1. Make time each day to ask your child what they did in class. 2. Make sure your child studies each night. If they finished their work in class, they should study their notes. 3. If your child has problems with the homework, have them read over their notes or look on edmodo. 4. Encourage your child to get a study partner who is taking this class or has already taken the class. 5. If your child still does not understand the homework, encourage them to see me for help before or after school the next day. 6. Stress the importance of a good education. I will be sending reports to keep you updated on your childs progress. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I am looking forward to a great semester. Thank You,

Melissa Sharpe 322-5860 x 2246 sharpeme@hickoryschools.net
