PROCEDURE
INTRODUCTION (_2mins_MINS): Hook: Where have some of Jan Bretts stories taken place? (she illustrates the books and the pictures give hints)

Transition to Body: Show title page of book and have students hypothesize about the story based on setting in the title page illustration

BODY (16MINS): Learning Activity #1:ReadAloud Story -show pictures as you read -stop to explain any topics or words students may not be familiar with 1. Where do you think the story is taking place? (LO#3) 2. Why do you think the story is set there? (LO#3)

Learning Activity #2:Cool Elements -students will pull important elements that establish setting from the story -record the words to be put up on the board for later Outline: Where, Mood, Weather, Time of Day *Use interactive story map to outline The Hat* http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/storymap/ What are some cool elements Jan Brett uses to establish setting? (LO#2) Learning Activity #3: Hedgehog Worksheet Continuation -have students go back to desks -hand out hedgehog worksheets -have students create a setting for their hedgehog (be sure to provide an example) Ex.) Once a tiny hedgehog lived in a tiny hole in the ground. It was narrow and dark. The earth was cool and smelled of composted roots and leaves. The tiny hedgehog loved his tiny hole home because it stayed the same no matter the time of day or the season of the year It was always cool and snug, this made the tiny hedgehog feel safe and secure.
