Task # 1 Introduction

Fun in Functions

To Do: 1) Read the following links and study. a) Relation VS Function http://www.mathwarehouse.com/algebra/relation/math-function.php b) How can you use a vertical line to determine if a graph is a function? http://www.mathwarehouse.com/algebra/relation/vertical-line-test.php c) More links: http://www.visualmathlearning.com/algebra/chapter_3/chapter_3.html http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/intermediate-algebra.html 2) Click the link below for practice. Copy (in A4 paper) the questions and the corresponding answers only. http://www.regentsprep.org/regents/math/algebra/ap3/funcprac.htm By suggesting that a function is a relation, one is essentially stating that there is some sort of relationship between the inputs and the outputs. The lines with arrows connecting inputs to outputs in a mapping demonstrate this relationship. On a vending machine, one would definitely say that there is a relationship between the numbered buttons and the drinks. "When you push the button 1, then you get a Coke. Evaluation Answer the following questions: 1. Describe the difference in a relation and a function? 2. Draw a mapping that is a relation but not a function. 3. Create a set of ordered pairs that is a function. 4. In your own words define input and output. 5. Describe when and how you would use the vertical line test. Task # 2 Introduction

The Great Mathematician

Are you interested in solving mathematical problems? Why don't you try to know who were the ones who make mathematics fun and interesting? Try to know the mathematicians who contributed their knowledge to make mathematics interesting. Did you ever wonder that why a complicated equation in mathematics has a simple answer? And why the buildings symmetrical, why the road tells the distance of a place to another place? If you're interested to know why, you should know who where the ones who make them, which is the mathematicians who contribute to make this things.

To Do: Click the link below, it will lead you to the website where the greatest mathematicians are listed. http://fabpedigree.com/james/greatmm.htm

Evaluation After clicking the website and reading the autobiographies of different mathematicians, you are going to make a poster that contains: 1) Name of the mathematician that interests you most with photo. 2) Mathematicians biggest contribution to the field of Mathematics. 3) Write a short summary of the mathematicians life. Dont forget to mention what characteristics he/she has that made her/him successful.
