ADS Triple Encoder Assemblies (P/Ns 30180740-BSC, -100, -200, -300, -400, -500, & -600)
Objective: To ensure Encoder Assembly Set Screw does not loosen and back out during normal operating conditions.
Issue: On some triple encoder assemblies, the set screw that retains the encoder gear to the shaft has vibrated loose resulting in the set screw backing out. This can result in relative motion between the encoder gear and shaft which will generate an encoder mismatch error which will force a category 2 E-Stop. Solution: Replace existing set screws with Kit, Set Screw (P/N 10656046). These new set screws are self-locking and will resist the tendency to back out. The kit is provided free of charge to the customer. This kit provides enough screws to retrofit the entire ADS.
Operators should also refer to previous NOV Product Information Bulletins and Safety Alerts at http://www.nov.com/drilling for additional information related to this issue and information regarding safe operation, maintenance, and inspection criteria. Failure to follow the recommendations and/or guidance in NOV Product Bulletins may result in death, bodily injury or property damage. Please contact your local National Oilwell Varco (NOV) Service Center to order the retrofit kit or if you have any questions regarding this bulletin.
