A New Prince!
It is the evening of 21 June 1982 - the first day of
summer. Newspaper and television reporters near the
doors of St Marys Hospital in Paddington, London,
talk qui ckly into their telephones.
'It's a boy ... Yes! ... Princess Dian a has a little
boy ... at 9.03 this evening ... England has a new
prince! ... Yes, and mother and child are well ... We're
waiting to see Prince Charles ... '
At eleven o'cl ock that night, Prince Charles - the
Prince of Wales - comes out of the hospital. He answers
question s from the reporters about his new SOI L
'He has blue eyes,' Prince Charles says. ' He and his
mother are very well. They're coming home tomorrow.'
' What's his name?' the reporter s want to know.
Prince Charles smiles. ' We don't know,' he says.
'We're thinking about it .'
Charles likes the name Art hur, but Diana does not.
She wants William. A week later, the reporters have
their answer: William Arthur Philip Loui s. Hi s mother's
name for him is ' Wills'.
Earl y Days
Prin ce Charles wants Mabel Anderson to be Prince
Wi lliam' s nanny. She was Pri nce Charles's nanny years
before. Prin cess Di ana says no. She doesn't want an old
person .They give the j ob to Barbara Barn es.
Princess Diana is a very loving mother. She likes
having William near her. and her bedroom at Kensington

Palace is near his room. Later, she often gets int o bed
wit h Wi lliam and his brother at night. She says, 'Who
loves you?' They answer, 'You! ' The princess smiles.

It is 1983. Pr ince Charles and Prin cess Di ana are go ing


to visit Australia and New Zealand. But Diana wants to
be with William. W hat can she do?
Then the Prime Mini ster of Australia, Malcolm
Praser, wr ites a letter to Diana. In it he says, ' Please
bring Prince Wi lliam with you.'
Diana talks to Charles, and he says yes. They take
Will iam to Australia wit h them. The young pr inc e stays
in Woomargama, a place in New South W1les, with
Nanny l3arnes. Hi s mother and father oft en visit him.

On 15 Sept ember 1984, a new brother arrives for


William. Two days later, he goes to the hospital to see
him. The new child's name is Harr y, and Wi lliam loves
playing with him.
School Days
A year later, on 24 September 1985, William starts school
at Mrs Mynor's School in Notting Hill , in London.
It is very near to Kensington Palace. A poli ceman
goes to school with William every day.
On the first morning William runs out of the car, but
his mother stops him.The newspaper repo rters all want
to take his photograph. Television reporters want hi s
pi cture, too.
William goes to school two mornings a week, the n

every morning, Now he knows numbers. and he can
write his name. He quickly makes a lot of friends.
But he is no t always a good boy at home.
'Go to bed, Wi lliam,' says Na nny Bar nes,
' No,' says Will iam. 'You can't say that to me! I'm
going to be king on e day.'

In Janu ar y, 1987, Willi am has a new nanny - Ruth


Wallace. Wil liams name for he r is ' Nanny R oof' .
At the same time, Will iam starts at Wetherby School.
This is in Notting Hill, too. Here he plays a lot of
sports, and he gets a pr ize for swimming. Every year the
scho ol has a Sports Day. William and his friends watch
Princess Diana and Prin ce Charles in the games for
mothers and father s.
He moves to Ludgrove School in Berkshire in
September 1990. He lives there, and he goes home for
school holidays. William is very happy at Ludgrove.
Again, he plays a lot of games, and he is good at
football . At twe lve, he get s a prize for shooting.
Pr ince Charles likes co unt ry spo rts and often takes
his young son with him. Willi am watches his fathe r
shooting at Sandringham, one of the Q ueen 's co untry

homes. Aft er that, Wi lliam want s to shoot, too.
At Ludgrove, William is good at writi ng. He gets the
school pr ize for wri ting in 1992 .
An Accident at School
It is June 1991 , and William is playi ng golf with his
friends at Ludgrovc. Sudde nly, the re is an acci de nt . A

fri end hi ts him on the head. The school sends Willi am
to a hospital in Reading.
Princess Diana is eating with a friend. She hears
about the accident and goes qui ckly to the hospi tal.
Prince Charles also hears about it and dri ves to
Reading.
The doctor s are not happy. They send William to
Great Or mond St reet Hospital for Children, in
London . Diana goes with Will iam, and Prince Charles
goes in his car.
At Great O rmond Street, William has a small but
important operation on his head. His mot her waits at
the hospital. Prince Charles cannot stay because he has
important visitors. But the operation goes well . The
doctor s say to Princess Diana,'William is OK.'
Charles and Diana Divorce
William often teleph on es his mot her from school. He
likes talking to her, and she wants to talk to him.
Diana and Charles are not happy. Wi lliam knows
thi s. He knows about their problems, and he is unhappy
abo ut them. They are not good for the Queen or for
the country, and Wi lliam knows thi s, too.
Prin ce Charles and Princess Diana do not live in the
S;l111C house. Charles lives in his country home at
Hi ghgrove House. William visits him there. He likes
Highgrovc, and he loves his father. But it is a diffi cult
time for hi m. William likes watchi ng television .
' Television is bad for you: his father says. ' Why do n't
you read a book or come for a walk in the count ry"

Pr incess Di ana lives at Kensington Palace with the
boys. Wi lliam loves to ru n to his mother's bedroom
every morning. He plays games with her and they talk.

O ne day, William says to Harry, 'I'm going to be a


poli ceman.'
' You can't,' says Harry. 'You 're going to be king.'
William do es not want to think about thi s.

Pri nce Charles and Pri ncess Diana divorce in August,


1996. After that, hol idays with their mother and father
are never the same for William and Harry.
Their mother takes them to the Car ibbea n to swim
in the sea. Or she takes them ski ing in Ca nada or
Ameri ca. Charles takes them ski ing in Klosters, in
Switzerland, or to Greece, or on a boat in the
Mediterranean.They often go to Balmoral , the Queen's
home in Scotland.
After the divorce, William and his brothe r have a new
nanny at their father's home. Her name is Alexandra
'Tiggy' Legge-Bourke and she is young. Diana is not
ver y happy about Tigb'Y, but William and Harry like her.
' Please Stay Away!'
After l.udgrove, William goes to England's famous
school for boys - Eton. It is a friendl y school. He is
very happy there, and he has many friends.
Some times Willi am goes out of the school with two
or three boys. They go into the town of Windsor, to
the shops or to a cafe. William likes go ing sho pping
somet imes. But two policem en always go with the
boys, and they are always near.
Sometimes ph otographers go after th em and take
ph otograph s. William does not like th is. And ne wspaper
reporters ofte n write stories about his unhappy mother
and father. T his makes hiin very unhappy, too.
But he is start ing to look at girls! He has pi ctures of
gi rls at Eton - photographs of beautiful girls and young
W0111cn from television and films.
One year at Klosters. Wi lliarn meets a girl. She goes
skiing wi th him, and th ey have a very happy time.
Every year, at Et on, there is an O pen Day. The boys'
fami lies can visit the school on that impo rt ant day.
Bur one year, Wi lliam does not want his mother and
fathe r at the Open Day. It is a happy day for his friends
and their families, and he do es not want a lot of
photographers there.T he prince and pri ncess understand,
and they do not go. But Willi am does ask Tigb'Y.
It is a happy day for W illiam. He eats wit h T igb'Y.
T he n he and one of hi s fr iends walk and talk with the
mot hers, fat he rs and sisters of th e boys. And th ey meet
a lot of beauti ful young gi rlsI
The Car Accident
Early in the morning of 3 1 Au gust 1')')7 , Pri ncess
Diana co mes out of the R itz Hotel in Paris wit h Dodi
Faved . A short time later , they are dead, in a car
accident. Princess Di ana is only thirty- six years old.
Williarn and Ha rry are on holi day at Balmoral with
th eir father. At 3 o' clock in the morni ng, Charles and

the Queen hear about the accident. T he two young
prin ces are sleeping. At 7.30. their fathe r talks to them
about the accident. He then telepho nes Ti ggy. She
co mes to Scotland to be with the boys.
Willi am and Harry go to churc h with t heir fathe r
later that morning. Newspaper and television reporters
and a small number of people watch qui etly.
Five days later, Charles and his sons go to London and
look at the thousands of flower s near Kensingt on Palace.
They talk to some of the people there. Peop le in every
country watch the pictures of Willi am on television.
Prince Wi lliam is not a boy now - he is a young

Di ana was a very good mot he r. ' Her boys' we re very


important to her. An d she wanted to reach them about
people - not only about qu eens, princes and
pnncesses.
Wi lliam went shopping with her and they went into
cafes. T hey went to see people with no homes, and to
see very ill people.
Now Diana is dead, and Prince Charles is tr ying to
do some of the same things with Wi lliam and his
brother. It is a difficult time for them all, but they are a
strong and loving fami ly Princess Di anas family want
to do things for Wi lliam and Harr y, too.
Newspaper report ers do not write about Will iarn
or Har ry very often now. or take phot ographs of
them. There are not many pictures of them on
television. Many peopl e say, ' This is ri ght. They are
only young boys:
'WilliatTI,We Love You!'
Wi lliam and Harry go to CJnJ dJ with the ir fat her for J
ski ing holi day. Hundreds of girls wait for J long time in
the hot sun in Vancouver. They \VJ I lt to see Prince
Willi am and Prince Har ry.
T he big CJr stops. The doors open. T he re are th e two
yo ung princes. 'WilliJm! Willi Jm! ' the girls SJY. ' We
love you !' And th ey gi ve him flowers.
T his is very diffi cult for William, but he smiles. He
takes th e fl ower s and talks to one or two of th e girls.
"Thank you: he SJYs.
Some days lat er, Williarn visits J school in Vancouver.
Girls are waiting there to see him, too. and to gi ve him
flowers. 'I love him!' SJys one girl. 'I've got pictures of
him at home in my bedroom! '

And now' W illiarn likes Eton and hJS some very good
friends there. But he does not talk about them. He is
' Wills' to them.
He loves Hi ghgrove House, and he goes there at
weekend s and in the school ho lidays. It is quiet th ere.
T her e are 110 reporter s, and nu photographers. He and
Har ry play foo tba ll in the garde ns. T hey swim at
High grove, too. Ther e are pi ctures of sports men and
in their bedrooms.
T heir London home is in St j ames's Palace now.
Wi lliam likes driving. He likes skiing. He likes
shooting and JIl count ry sports. He loves go ing to
Balmoral in Scotland. He likes readi ng books and goi ng

clog's name is Widgeon.

Wi lliam is J young man , but one thy he is goi ng to be

her blue eyes and fri en dl y smile.
