A RCHITECTURAL SENSITIZ ATION an observation . . . .

Architecture and the building technologies of the past have withstood the test of time. Our ancestors built better with their effort and technologies/ techniques that they had. They used their common sense to understand material and constructed the grandest structures ever. They did not get involved in heavy long researches. They did not get involved in the modular approach to design. They were observant and calculative. They used their locally available materials for their intrinsic values and inherent properties. They thought simple, to the point and built with their highly evolved intuitive sense. They relied on the traditional wisdom that passed from the father to son or Guru to Shishya. When common sense practices become a way of life they were referred to as traditional practices, to be followed almost with a religious passion. And thus design solutions often resulted from a combination of socio-cultural needs and technological limitations. The Architectural expression of a society is thus a composite picture with its share of spiritual aspirations, planning rules/regulations affordability and technological capacity. This religious symbolism herein along the course of time has presented that an inextricable link has existed historically between a buildings characteristics, form, appearance, function and the characteristics of the diverse materials that were available and best suited for construction. The objective here is not to criticize the new styles of architecture but to look into the common sensical approach in architecture to achieve an outcome with relevance to the citys overall context , growth dynamics, location, architectural sensitivity, technological advancements and availability of resources. Design Problem:
The idea is to create a project within the modern context with due respect and acknowledgment of the old. The idea is to dwell into not just the drawings, but also the materials. The project and the understanding of the building material/ technology should have a modern-day context yet draw on traditional wisdom. The drawings should reflect the linkage between the simplistic architectural spatial planning methods, utilitarian aspect of designs, common sensibility and material used to culminate the thought process into a built form design solution.

Emphasis on RE-search and NOT research. The design assignment constitutes THE SCOPE to be as: Site selected should be a part of the CBD (Central Business District) of the city you live in. A central business district (CBD, also called a central activities district) as referred to here, is, the commercial and often geographic heart of a city. The Site under consideration should not be less than 1 acre (4000 sq. m approximately) in area and should preferably have a gradient of min. 5% with a major city road touching it directly or in proximity (distance not more than 500mt) in one side.

Objective of the Assignment:

To study the overall growth dynamics of the city and the site in particular over a span of last 10 years. To document your understanding of the architectural character, ingredients, common sense attributes/elements/techniques adopted To study the planning of the site area in reference to the city and the neighbourhood development pattern and development mix. Based on the documentation of the planning, development trends and architectural sensibility of the city and site in specific identify the characteristics, features and elements you would incorporate to find the design solution for redevelopment (redevelopment just does not mean you RE-develop the site but to think beyond) of the CBD area of your city with logical and common sense based arguments and explanations to create an architectural masterpiece yet sensitized in approach and utility.

Submission Requirements:
Documentary Study: Study and document the citys overall growth trends, its architectural style and its evolution with relevance to its context. (Maximum 11 A3 Sheets) Significance of Site Area: Site selection & justification, the contextual analysis and representing the response of the selected site in relevance to the field of study along with its Land use pattern. (Maximum 5 A3 Sheets) Idea Generation and conceptualize: Different stages of evolution in relevance to the site and neighbourhood. The site being a CBD would have to be justified with the different stages of evolution along the different time period the citys overall growth. Details/Illustrations to show the complete understanding of the process. (Maximum 8 A3 Sheets)

Design Solution:
The design submission comprises of: Scale Drawings: Plans, Sections, and Elevations of the site, building mass proposed or redeveloped + Detailed Site Plan with all landscaping and details. Overall layout of the site under consideration in comparative mode the present and the proposal. The medium could be 2D drawings or even 3D idea presentation (Computer generated 3-ds are NOT acceptable; ONLY hand drawn Perspectives/ Sketches shall be accepted) Details/ Illustrations to show the complete understanding of the design idea. Relevance of materials used in all contexts of the design solution (Maximum 8 A3 Sheets)

Guidelines to be followed:
Choice of sheets, scale is left to the discretion of the participant(s) to the condition that the scale should be in metric system and all the drawings should be clear and legible. The submission should be restricted to a maximum of 21 A3 size sheets for the design and 11 A3 sheets for the documentation (420mmx297mm) sheets(not panels) in a landscape format. All sheets should be opaque unless they are used as overlays (Not bigger than A3) will be counted as separate sheets. The format of the sheet should contain a square box of 25mm x 25mm at the bottom right hand corner, next to the NASAINDIA logo which should have the unique registration number allotted to the participants after registrations. NASA logo can be downloaded from the website : www.nasaindia.info The sheets are to be numbered properly. The format shall clearly mention ANDC 2013. Data supporting the proposal shall be included in the report which shall be an integral part of the submission. A soft copy of the sheets in 2 Compact Disks is mandatory with the entry. Manually rendered entries should be scanned at a resolution of 300x300dpi and be sent as soft copy as well. Both the copies shall clearly state the unique registration number on the first page, not on the cover and also one of the copies shall state their college code as well (NOT BOTH). The copy shall be necessarily hard bound and shall carry the NASAINDIA logo as per logo guidelines on the cover page with the title ANDC 2013 A softcopy of the sheets and the report is to be sent on the E-Mail ID : submission.andc@gmail.com

A set of 2 reports, maximum 25 A4 sheets (each) should be accompanied with each entry.

Any of the submitted material i.e., Report or the Sheets not following the submission guidelines including incorrect NASAINDIA logo or the general brief guidelines shall not be considered and submitted to the jury for judging purpose. Any misconduct such as exposing identity through college name/participant(s) name or college code on the sheets will be disqualified.

Check list for Submission:

1. Hard copy of the sheets. 2. Soft copy of the sheets two CDs in editable and non editable format. 3. Two reports specifying the unique registration number on both and one with the college code as well. 4. Authenticating letter from HOD for every entry. 5. Declaration by the participant(s) stating the work submitted is genuine and they have endorsed copyrights for the same.

The Unit Secretarys are requested to send the dully filled registration form on or before May 30th 2013. No late registrations would be entertained. Kindly print the form on the college letterhead along with the attestation by the college HOD/Principle/Director respectively. The entries are expected to reach us on or before July 27th 2013 by 5pm. late submission will not be entertained and henceforth the defaulters will be disqualified. Please note: The entries must reach us by July 27th 2013 and not be the case that the participant(s) send their entries on July 27th 2013. So please make sure that the courier is done at-least 5 days in prior to the last date of submission. The host college will not be responsible for any damage caused to the sheets/report or the CD during the period of travel. Still in such case the Unit Secretary as well as the participant(s) will be informed and an extension might be considered on the submission deadline.
