ADC 11 Looking at HIV/AIDS in Developing Nations Notes

Country: South Africa

Your first task is to research a third-world country (an undeveloped nation) that is currently dealing with an AIDS or HIV epidemic. Many of these nations will be found in Sub-Saharan Africa, where many nations have infection rates that exceed twenty percent of the total population. You need to use at least two websites in your research.

Answer the following questions: #1 Total population of the country

$51.19 million

#2 Information about literacy rates and education 141,000,000 people in East Africa live on less than $2US/day. Typical family has 6 children. Cost of education remains the largest obstacle: $750 full board, $30 uniform/shoes, $30 school supplies. Low innovation and entrepreneurship contributes to high unemployment rates and dependency on foreign aid. Back to Top East Africa has high initial primary enrollment rates (>90%), but 30-40% of students leave before they complete primary school. In 2007, only 25% of elementary school students went on to high school because of the expenses. In 2006, 101 million children more than half of them girls were not attending primary school; the majority of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa. Sexual violence, unsafe school environments and inadequate sanitation disproportionately affect girls self-esteem, participation and retention in school. #3 Percentage of the population currently infected with HIV or AIDS

12%/ 5,600,000

#4 At least two relief organizations working within the country- Islamic Relief, NGO #5 What do the above relief organizations do? They both provide education, fresh water, health and

nutrition.
#6 Is anything being done about AIDS in this country by their own government or outside agencies? The first deaths from AIDS in South Africa occurred in 1985. The apartheid government of President P.W. Botha subsequently held a conference to address the potential threat the disease posed for the country. In 1987, regulations were issued that added AIDS to the official South African list of communicable diseases. These regulations called for a mandatory 14-day quarantine for individuals suffering, or suspected of suffering from AIDS. The quarantine could be extended indefinitely if a case was confirmed. Later that year, the first black South African was diagnosed with AIDS.

#7 Using the above information, write a brief paragraph (8-10 sentences) on How AIDS has impacted the country both socially and economically? Social impacts of AIDS: Socially it has scared the

population because of how easy spreading is. The government hasnt been doing as much as they should be doing. Economic impacts of AIDS: Economically it affects the government because people will demand help and money from them to live and if the government doesnt they can retaliate and become a corrupt government.
#8 What is your idea for your Awareness Campaign? My Awareness Campaign would involve

education, fresh water, health and nutrition, and food. To accept donations to go to kids and families in need of the supplies.
