DEAF STUDIES GRADUATE STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES COURSE DESCRIPTION During internship, each student will be assigned to teach 1 ASL class. Each student will be required to meet with her/his supervisor (faculty with the department) on a weekly basis to discuss upcoming classes for the week. The supervisor will observe the classes that the student teaches at least 3 times. At the end of the semester, the student will hand in her/his full course work, which includes lesson plans, sample quizzes and tests and her/his self-analysis. COURSE OBJECTIVES The basic premise behind ASL Teaching Internship is to apply firsthand theoretical and methodological issues as taught in previous and current courses. It is an opportunity for you to experience sign language instruction, including curriculum development, assessment, and incorporating Deaf culture into the language curriculum. From time to time throughout the semester, the class will meet and discuss personal experiences with teaching. Among other things, we will also discuss the importance of making continued contributions to the field of ASL Education. As you prepare to get yourself on the job market, each student is expected compile a well-rounded portfolio at the end of the semester. Policies and Procedures: 1. Academic ASL/English: We will learn and apply academic ASL/English, which is a specialized type of discourse for academic assignments. Use only academic ASL/ English in classroom and during video assignments throughout the semester. Professional academic discourse requires giving credit to original authors for their ideas, so citations in either languages are required. Using written ASL terms in your typed/ written work or English-based signing in your video work is not acceptable. 2. Career Center: Since this course includes job application documents, you are strongly encouraged to submit your cover letter and curriculum vitae for feedback with the Career Center. You are also required to participate in a mock interview. 3. Editing ASL/English works: You are required to edit your ASL/English assignments. Feel free to meet with your instructor or visit Tutorial & Instructional Programs to get the feedback as often as needed to produce the very best work possible. Full letter grade (or more) will be deducted for unedited papers or videos, regardless if submitted on time. 4. Attendance/Participation: Attendance includes seminar gatherings and teaching your classes. One absence equals a deduction of 3.3% from your final grade. Repeated tardiness and/or early departures may equal one absence. 5. Assignments: Assignments are due on the due dates listed below. Late submissions will NOT be accepted. Early submissions are more than welcome. GRADING Internship 80% 2 Supervisor Evaluations (10% each) 1 Video Self-Assessment (10%) Internship Portfolio (50%) Celebrations and Challenges Seminars 20% Attendance & Participation Internship Portfolio During internship, each student will be assigned to intern with one ASL course. The supervisor will observe the classes that the student teaches at least 2 times. Each student will film themselves teaching (no ASL students are to be in the video) for a full class period. This video is to be professionally edited and integrated with self-assessment based on the student teaching rubric. By the last day of classes for the semester (May 3rd), regardless of the last day of their internship, the student will hand in her/his Internship Portfolio, which includes class videos, presentations, lesson plans, quizzes and tests (including the final exam), any relevant course documents and her/his self-assessment.

Celebrations and Challenges Seminars All students are required to attend seminars where their internship experiences are discussed. Successful experiences are shared, and teaching challenges are analyzed by all participants for ways to improve.
