BUILDING A GLOBAL COMMUNITY Instructional Goal

As many college instructors move towards using more cooperative and collaborative learning techniques, post-high students will be required to work with their peers to achieve shared learning goals and complete group tasks and assignments. Connecting with others in the same field or who have similar interests also helps students to expand their network and share knowledge. As technology and social networking use has become widespread, social media is now a part of everyday life and plays an increasing role in influencing how people interact with each other. Social media can now provide a means to connect with peers virtually. Learning about various tools available to facilitate creating these collaborative communities will allow students to be aware of available options and make an informed decision on which to use to apply in their real life context. The instructional goal for this module is for learners to understand and demonstrate knowledge of tools that are available to build their own global community. By analyzing four types of open source technological tools and their key features, students will be able to choose the one that they prefer to start building their own global community.

BUILDING A GLOBAL COMMUNITY Target Population

The intended audience for this module is post-high school students. The population consists of adult English-speaking learners of varying ages, ethnicities and geographic locations. The targeted students are assumed to have basic computer literacy and experience with basic online technologies. This instruction is intended to provide those with only a general familiarity with online social media more information on key features of four media platforms so they will be able to choose an appropriate avenue to create their global community. Key features identified for each of the four social media platforms will be included within the module as an incentive for post-high school students to share information and interact with learners worldwide.

BUILDING A GLOBAL COMMUNITY Instructional Analysis

The terminal objective for our instructional module as shown at the top of the hierarchy chart is for worldwide English-speaking post- high students to be able to identify key features of 4 types of social media that they can use to build their own global community. There are preceding skills, sub skills and entry-level behaviors that students will master in order to accomplish this terminal objective. The entry level skills listed beneath the dotted line at the bottom of the hierarchy represent skills that are presumed to have been previously mastered by the learners and will not be taught in our module. In this case, the entry level skills include the ability to distinguish whether something is the same or different. Students will be able to discriminate between written communication, visual communication and social media. In the next higher level of the hierarchy, the subordinate skills shown are concrete concepts the student will learn to identify and classify. The concepts in this level include the following forms of communication: Email, instant messaging, text messaging, Skype. In addition, the student would learn to identify social media platforms: Twitter, blogs, Facebook, and Google+. The skills shown in the next higher level of the hierarchy represent rules that the student will consistently demonstrate to accomplish the terminal objective. Determining whether a form of communication is a social media platform will allow students to identify that it is a tool that may be used to build their global community. By using the sub skills learned, students will then be able to complete the terminal objective by identifying key features of the 4 types of social media covered in the lessons.

BUILDING A GLOBAL COMMUNITY Instructional Strategy Set Pre-instructional, Assessment, and Follow-Through Activities PRE-INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES Motivation: (Gagnes event #1) As many college instructors move towards using more cooperative and collaborative learning techniques, post-high students will be required to work with their peers to achieve shared learning goals and complete group tasks and assignments. Connecting with others in the same field or who have similar interests also helps students to expand their network and share knowledge. As technology and social networking use has become widespread, social media is now a part of everyday life and plays an increasing role in influencing how people interact with each other. Social media can now provide a means to connect with peers virtually. Learning about various tools available to facilitate creating these collaborative communities allows students to be aware of available options and make an informed decision on which to use to apply in their real life context. Today, you will learn about 4 tools and their key features that you can use to build your own global community. By analyzing four types of open source technological tools and their key features, you will be able to choose the one that you prefer to start building your own global community. Objectives: (Gagnes events #2, #3, #4, #5) The instructional goal for this module is for learners to understand and demonstrate knowledge of tools that are available to build their own global community. By analyzing four types of open source technological tools and their key features, students will be able to choose the one that they prefer to start building their own global community. Recall will be stimulated before the lessons by asking students to think about what they already know about tools to connect with their peers, specifically blogs, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. Colorful clear graphics will be included in the module along with chunking of material into 6 lessons. Students will be provided with a feature checklist and a list of definitions of each feature to use while they are doing the module. As they complete each lesson, they are able to check off the appropriate features of each social media platform.

ASSESSMENT Pretest: (Gagnes Event #6 & #7) A multiple-choice pre-test will be given to students before instruction to measure and evaluate the students knowledge of the content area of our instructional module. Practice Test: (Gagnes Event #6 & #7) Practice test items will be included after each lesson to insure that learners are progressing. Posttest: (Gagnes Event #7 & #8) A multiple choice test will be given to learners after each cluster in the module to determine students understanding of concepts presented. FOLLOW-THROUGH ACTIVITIES Memory Aids: (Gagnes Event #5 & #9) Students will be provided with checklist of features of communication tools that they fill out as progressing through the module. They will be provided with a completed checklist at the end of the module to compare to their own. They may keep this checklist to use for future reference. Transfer: (Gagnes Event #5 & #9) Using the knowledge gained, students can then identify their preferred social media platform. Students will then be able to begin to create their own global community with fellow classmates.
