Enemy of Time Time is a persons biggest enemy.

Time wont speed up or slow down when we want it to, time goes on its own will. The only way to control time is to be its friend, not its enemy. To do that, we have to let it run on its own, that way we can learn to manage our own time and just by managing it controls it. In I remember, I remember, Thomas ood uses repetition, dramatic irony and universal symbol that e!plains the wrath of time and shows what everyone misses in that wrath" memories. Throughout the poem, you notice every first line is I remember, I remember, It simply means that the spea#er is refreshing his memories. This is a form of repetition and the poet purposefully used this techni$ue because its the %beginning, the start of the new phrase. It also signifies that it goes bac# to the memories of his past. %I &emember holds a significant meaning of showing that you havent forgotten your memories. In the first stan'a, and second stan'a, theres evidence of dramatic irony. The first stan'a, second line says" The house where I was born. The spea#er e!plains that he remembers when and where he was born. This is important because no one remember the moment they were born and ever the time after that, no one can remember the days when they were babies. The first stan'a represents the beginning( the beginning of life and time. The second stan'a shows the same results. In stan'a two, lines )*+ says" ,nd where my brother set, the

laburnum on his birthday. The second stan'a is the second stage of life, being a child and as people usually say, the mind of a child is innocent and pure. In the third stan'a the second line says" -hen I was used to swing, was a universal symbol. -hen you first read it, spea#er sounds li#e hes being abused, but if you loo# at it this way( the poet actually uses this phrase to symboli'e something universal, a father. , father is someone who uses anything to ma#e his family happy. .sually, the #id would as# to hang from their fathers arms, and swing from it. The third stan'a is the third stage life of a father and which is adulthood. The last stan'a, is the concluding stan'a. It was a childish ignorance, but now %tis little joy, to #now Im farther off from heaven than I was a boy. /lines 0*12. The last stan'a is the last stage of life and the end of your time. The poet uses irony showing its actually happening his time is near and he doesnt have that long to live any longer. This poem is a memoir of someone who reminiscences his

past and remembers his memories. 3ut the dramatic irony is that he only remembers the simplest things that wouldnt seem to be memorable. 3ut the poet writes only the simple and basic memories because it ties in with the topic we were tal#ing about earlier" time. 4oo#ing at the poem again, each stan'a represents a stage of growth and each stan'a doesnt contain a lot of %memories. The purpose of this is because it shows the spea#er was a victim of time and suffers

with the speed of time itself. 5ince he #ept rushing time, time decides to ta#e it in its own hands, speeding it up and the spea#er reali'es at the last stage he didnt use it wisely. The moral of this poem is to show we ta#e time for granted and when we get to a certain point in our life, we only remember the things that stic# out to us, li#e mista#es, bad choices or things we did that made us or people around us proud. The poem itself is a motif and symbolism of life. I remember, I remember by Thomas ood uses repetition, dramatic

irony and universal to let us learn the lesson about time" 6ont let your enemy but your friend.
