Valley Traditional High School Health Syllabus

Instructor: Mr. Morris

School Year: 2013-2014

All students are required to pass 12 weeks of health, as well as 12 weeks of physical education to be eligible for graduation. General Description of the Course This course is designed to introduce a combination of information necessary for healthy lifestyle choices. Health is a course designed to teach students how be physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and environmentally healthy. This course directly relates to students in their everyday life, and should help students to grow in all of the domains of health. Class Rules 1. Be respectful of others (Peers and Instructor) 2. Be in dress code everyday (School Policy) 3. No profanity 4. No sleeping in class 5. No cell phones, IPODS, headsets, (Electronic Devices) 6. Raise your hand to speak 7. Students may not leave class the first or last 10 minutes of class. Class Routines 1. Be prepared everyday (Bring pencil, paper, and be ready to work) 2. Be on time and seated when the bell rings (Three tardies in a six week period will result in a referral and you will be sent to your principal. 3. Check the Agenda/CIF on the board. 4. Work quietly on the bell activity or wait quietly for instruction. 5. Last 5 minutes of class clean-up your area, put books under the desks, and remain seated. Expectations I expect each and every one of you to put forth an effort to do well. I believe that all students can learn at some level, and I have high hopes that you will want to learn in this class not only for the grade that you will receive, but for the knowledge that you will gain as well. I expect all assignments to be completed and turned in, and I expect to see good quality work. Writing down just anything will not be acceptable. We are trying to move students to a level of proficiency. If you do the best that you can, you will do extremely well.

Grades Based on the JCPS scale. 100%-93% (A), 92%-86% (B), 85%-79% (C), 78%70% (D), 69%-0% (U). Grades will be based on participation in class (30%), completing and turning in daily assignments (30%), homework (10%) and various forms of assessments (tests) 30%. The key to doing well in this class will be to turn in all of your assignments and to put forth quite a bit of effort. Attendance/Make-up work Attendance is very important. If you are not here, you miss out on vital information and your daily class work. Make-up work will only be given if you have an excused absence or at my discretion and you will be required to come to me to receive it. It is your responsibility. Content This course will address many health-related issues including: communication and refusal skills, goal setting, character development, stress management, nutrition, physical activity, weight control, mental health and mental disorders, sexual responsibility, sex education and sexually transmitted diseases, family life education, sexual reproduction, drug, alcohol, and tobacco education, communicable and non-communicable diseases, first aid/CPR, personal safety, environmental health, and consumerism.
