(b) What are abrasives? How are they classified? Explain the various types of

5. (a) Define the term composite material. Explain the important characteristic
properties of composite materials.
(b) Discuss the influence of fibre length, orientation and composition on fibre
reinforced composites. [6+10]
6. (a) What are the various properties that are to be considered for good bonding
between fibres and matrix. Explain with suitable examples.
(b) Explain the effect of volume fraction on the properties of various types of

7. (a) What are MMCs? Give examples of a few industrially important MMCs and
give their properties and applications.
(b) Compare and contrast particulate composite materials and fibre reinforced
