! the t"shirts # received $hile hel%ing coach an 8th grade girls basketball team in &latteville, '#( # also have the signatures o! the t$o coaches( he ages o! the girls $ere thirteen and !ourteen years old( 'e %racticed t$o times a $eek !or t$o hours each %ractice at the )rmory in &latteville( Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment his e*%erience aligns best $ith standard ten o! the 'isconsin +tandards !or eacher ,evelo%ment and -icensure( +tandard ten states that . he teacher !osters relationshi%s $ith school colleagues, %arents, and agencies in the larger community to su%%ort students/ learning and $ell"being(0 he arti!act # chose aligns $ith standard ten because # develo%ed relationshi%s $ith the %layers, their %arents, the coaches, and the community( # $as able to hel% the girls that # coached $ith more than 1ust basketball( # $as three years older than the girls # hel%ed coach, $hich made it really easy !or them to talk and connect $ith me and vice versa( Coaching $as a lot o! !un and it is something that # could really see mysel! doing in the !uture( # loved meeting ne$ %eo%le and # $as really sad at the end o! the season because it $as over( # still kno$ a lot o! the girls # hel%ed coach very $ell today and see them o!ten( Coaching $as a really good $ay !or me to develo% my skills !or hel%ing kids and develo%ing their strengths, $eaknesses, and team$ork( # also develo%ed more skills like hel%ing the girls $ith drills and the coaches organi2e %ractice( UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment )lignment +tatement 3+,4(c5 Communicates $ith 6amilies Communication $as key $hile # hel%ed coach eighth grade girls basketball( # had to talk $ith the girls/ !amilies and make sure they kne$ $hat $as going on at %ractices and $hen games and tournaments $ere( he girls/ !amilies trusted me to kno$ $hat # $as doing and to hel% the girls im%rove( # have been %laying basketball since # $as in !irst grade, about seven or eight years old, so # kno$ the s%ort $ell and have a lot o! e*%erience $atching and %laying it( 7ighth grade girls also have a lot o! other stu!! going on emotionally and in their lives( # hel%ed the girls get through some emotional and hard times by 1ust being there to talk to and listen to them( # think that it is really im%ortant !or the teacher to stay connected and kno$ $hat is going on in a student/s or %arent/s li!e so they kno$ i! the student needs e*tra time on assignments or someone to talk to( +taying connected is very im%ortant !or a teacher to do out o! class( his connection is also im%ortant !or teachers to have $ith the students/ %arents or guardians because they need to kno$ ho$ their child is doing in school and socially( his also addresses the !ollo$ing 3+,/s5 3+,2(a( " Creates an 7nvironment o! 8es%ect and 8a%%ort 3+,2(d( " 9anages +tudent Behavior 3+,:(a( " Communicates Clearly and )ccurately 8e!lection What I learned abo t teaching!learning "orm this e#perience$ hrough hel%ing coach, # learned ho$ to communicate $ith many di!!erent %eo%le including other coaches, %layers, and %arents( # can use $hat # learned about communication $ith %arents, %layers, and coaches and relate it to the communication that is needed bet$een teachers, students, and %arents( # learned that everyone needs to be on the same %age $ith things that are going on and ho$ the student is doing( # also learned that it is very im%ortant to have relationshi%s bet$een students and their %arents

because i! you have that relationshi%, you can encourage more su%%ort at home !or that student( )s a teacher, you $ill also be able to kno$ more about the students/ study environment out o! class( #! a teacher reali2es that a student has very little su%%ort !rom %arents and a %oor study environment at home, the teacher can understand $hy a student might not be doing as $ell and can hel% the student overcome obstacles !rom this( What I learned abo t m%sel" as a prospective ed cator 'hen # hel%ed coach a traveling club basketball team that cost ;uite a bit o! money, some o! the girls/ !amilies struggled to %ay( alking $ith the other coaches and %arents, $e !igured out a $ay !or some o! the girls to still be able to %artici%ate and %lay on the traveling club basketball team( he solution $e came to $as to set u% a %ayment %lan $hich the %arents $ere very ha%%y about( # learned ho$ to brainstorm and come u% $ith di!!erent ideas on ho$ to !i* this issue !or a !e$ o! the !amilies( # have learned that it is im%ortant to kee% communication o%en $ith the coaches, %layers, and %arents( #! there had been no communication, some o! the girls $ouldn/t have been able to %lay on the team even though it $as very im%ortant to them( # have learned that communication and building relationshi%s $ith children and their !amilies is key(
