Final Paper for Road Trip Unit The past few weeks we have been working with the

novel Paper Towns by John Green. We have used the three essential questions to guide us as we explored the personal journeys of not only the characters within the novel but our own personal journeys as well. As a final demonstration for what you have learned you will be writing a paper on a novel of your choice and applying one of the essential questions to the journey of the main character. Steps for creating the paper, a checklist for the final product, and a rubric you will be scored with are as follows: Step One: Choosing a Novel Please choose one of the following novels, that you have NOT read before, to use for your final paper. Note that even though there are some easy texts it may not be as simple to apply the essential questions. Step Two: Read the Novel As you read make sure that you are frequently referring to the essential questions. Here they are again: 1.) What is a journey? 2.) Is there such a thing as fate? 3.) Is there a right path for everyone? All of the questions may be applicable to your novel, but your paper will only be on one of them. Pay attention to which of them either has more support or clear connections to Paper Towns, it will make writing the paper easier in the long run. Please complete your novel by October 7th.

Step Three: Create a Topic Proposal In this proposal you will outline what your paper will be about. You need to include what essential question you will be working with, what character you are going to be looking at, how that character shows the parallels of a journey (Emotional & Physical), and how this journey compares to that of one in Paper Towns. This proposal will set up the first draft of your paper along with giving me information about what you plan on writing about. Step Four: Create a 1st draft This paper should be a traditional five paragraph essay. That means your paper should include an introduction, three supporting paragraphs and a final conclusion. With the help of your topic proposal you should have your ideas already collected and should be able to start writing a first draft of your paper. Remember that in your supporting paragraphs you need to include textual evidence (quotes) to show your line of thought. This draft should be very close to the final paper requirements. Put a lot of effort on this first draft and there most likely will be less to fix/add later. Step Five: Peer Edit/Revise Apart of becoming a good writer is checking in with peers and getting suggestions and help that will improve your final paper. With a partner complete a peer review worksheet. Offer advice, point out grammatical errors, let them know where sentences might be confusing, or where ideas need to be a bit clearer. Once you have finished your sheet, return it to the author a talk over your suggestions. Please repeat this with another partner. In the end you should have had two different people read your paper and receive two peer review forms. Step Six: Make Changes Based on the feedback from your peers start to revise your paper. This does not mean that you just fix your grammatical errors. Take another look at your ideas and suggestions from the peer evaluation form. Make sure that you have done you best to convey your ideas and points of view. Step Seven: Turn in Final Draft You have completed all of the steps towards creating a final paper! Please make sure you turn in all of the following items with your final draft. I will not accept a paper that is missing any of the checklist items.

The paper clearly connects to one essential question and is referenced and discussed throughout the entire paper. The development of the main character throughout the entire novel was analyzed and connected to the characters within Paper Towns with multiple areas of support. Supported big ideas from multiple areas of the novel with multiple quotes. Paper shows how the two different journeys, physical & spiritual, are interconnected. Paper is well organized, it is easy for the reader to see the progression of the writers thoughts.

The development of the character is only analyzed in a small portion of the text and characters comparison from Paper Towns is in need of support.
