Lesson: Colour Your Own Play Dough Lesson Time: 45 minutes Grade: 1 Unit A: Creating Colour GLOs Students will: 1-1 Bring focus to the investigative activities, based on their own questions and those of others. 1-2 Describe materials and objects that have been observed and manipulated, and identify what was done and found out. 1-4 demonstrate positive attitudes for the study of science and for the application of science in responsible ways. SLOs Students will: 4. Predict and describe changes in colour that result from the mixing of primary colours and from mixing a primary colour with white or with black. 5. Create a colour that matches a given sample, by mixing the appropriate amounts of two primary colours. Learning objectives Students will: 1) Review what the primary colours are by using food dye to make red, blue and yellow play dough 2) Purpose how they can make new colours by mixing the primary colours 3) Predict what colours will be formed when different primary colours are mixed together 4) Work collaboratively with team members to mix the different primary coloured play doughs to see what colours they can make 5) Record their findings on a worksheet 6) Show a concern for safety when using the materials 7) Identify the colours produced by mixing different primary colours 8) Brainstorm how other colours are mixed Learning resources http://letsdoscience.com/content_pdf/Grade1CreatingColour.pdf#pagemode=bookmarks&pag e=4 Ricki Wortzman. o What we are going to do with PLAY DOUGH o Safety and clean up in the classroom o Groups! o Materials time o Activity: Colour Dough o Clean up o Wrap up o Latex gloves Review of what a primary colour is o What is a primary colour? Examples from last class? o Review activity Find three things in the classroom that have primary colours Quick share with class o Power point Lets check our primary colours! Body 30 minutes What we are going to do with PLAY DOUGH o Explain that we are going to be making our own primary colored play dough! And after we are going to use our primary dough to mix new colours. Safety o What do we do when we have experiment materials? o What should we do if something spills? o What do we do if we need help? o Where do we keep our materials? Clean up o Make sure the top and under your table is clean o When its clean up time NO ONE is touching the experiment and pencils are down o Use your groups garbage o Use paper towel if there is a mess o Help your group Groups o How do we behave when we work in groups? o Everyones opinion matters =) o Batman: Gets materials for the experiment o Spiderman: in charge of clean up o Wonder women: mixes up the colours Materials time o Batman comes and takes a tray with 3 balls of uncolored play dough and three small cups with a few drops of each yellow, blue and red food dye. 3 bowels, paper towel. o While Batman is collecting the materials the teacher will hand out the worksheets.

Worksheet go over o Read through worksheet with students. o Students will use crayons to map out the colours that mixing primary colours create. First with a prediction and then with the results of the experiment Example: Red and Blue make what colour? Using a purple crayon students will shade in the area beside the question Activity: Colour Dough o First! Making primary colours! Wonder women will put on latex gloves and mix the small amount of food dye with the play dough balls in their separate bowel so the colours do not get mixed together. o Second! Making secondary colours! What will happen when we mix our primary colours? What are these colours called? Students will make their predictions Students will take a small bit of the yellow play dough and mix it with a small bit of red play dough. Then record their findings. Then do the same for red and blue dough and blue and yellow dough. Closure 10 minutes Clean up o Spiderman! Make sure you groups play dough is put off on the side counter where your names are. Then put the trays back on the back counter. o Wonder women and Spider man check around the table and make sure its clean. Wrap up o Go over answers from worksheet. o What did you think? o Did anything surprise you? o Did everyone come up with the exact same colours? Why would some look different? o Do we see any of these colours in the classroom? o Can we think of any other times weve seen colours changed when they were mixed? o Wrap up video- lets see if the colours we got were right! Hand in worksheet to teacher Assessment methods Class discussion- questions and prompts are to be used to gage students readiness and understanding on the subject. Worksheet- Used to gage how much of the experiment the student understood and could record. Observations- watching students as they perform their experiments. Looking/listening for students conversation, questions and performance with the experiment. Visiting groups as they work.
